As the Academy Awards committee has declared its nominations for this year’s “best of” I thought it would be fun to take a look at trophies as a decorative accessory…this isn’t too much of a stretch, is it?
Trophies were few and far between in my youth. I was on my high school swim team but at my public school awards consisted of paper certificates or ribbons over an actual trophy. I don’t remember any of my friends having lots of trophies so I’m surmising that in my region of Southern California they were not readily handed out.
The trophy on the left (above) was the first trophy I purchased. A close up…
It wasn’t until I was married that, while antique shopping, a vintage trophy caught my eye. I believe it was planted with blooming paper whites, which is undoubtedly what attracted me. I brought it home and didn’t buy another trophy until I found a little pewter dog show award on eBay (below).
Above and below is the pewter dog-award cup I found on eBay.
Today I have a few trophies that I’ve collected along the way and continue to admire some of the displays I’ve found on the internet. I lean toward the vintage silver toned beauties, but it’s the odd “Gala Award” or the small silver tray-award I bought while visiting Cambridge given by “RMAS Athletics Team” that steal my heart.

The above trophy is my latest find, the little plaque on the base says,”The Old Bucket of Blood, Virginia City, 1876″

First, do you have any vintage/antique trophies? Second, which movie gets your vote as “Best Picture”?

I *think* my favorite is the second to last with the rolled napkins and forks. SO lovely!! And your little dog award is too adorable.
I might have also voted for the all-white living room where trophies are displayed above the bookcase. That room is so lovely. With the GLARING exception of the portrait hung on the bookcase. I wanted to pin it to my interiors board, but was too irritated by the random, incoherent placement. So have punished the designer by withholding my pin… NO award for them.
I got no sleep last night, so now am totally cranky and judgmental. LOL…
By the way? How do you feel about faux greenery? I always love the look of fresh stuff, but it’s messy and doesn’t stay the way it started, and sometimes doesn’t get enough light… I’m always tempted by the faux stuff (nice faux stuff) from Restoration Hardware or the like… but I also kind of think it’s stupid. I mean, it’s plastic…
This might be a burning question that other readers have too, and maybe you need to do a post about it.

Victoria, Ha,ha,ha…that had to be the homeowners dead uncle (may he RIP). There can’t be any other reason to hang that portrait in front of what is otherwise a great bookcase. I hate it when I don’t sleep, I totally understand how sleep deprivation works as an act of torture.
Thanks for the idea on a post…ideas have been a little few and far between over here lately. I have very strong feelings about faux greenery, and they might surprise you (or not). I’ll begin work on this topic immediately. Is it freezing cold in PA? It’s very, very cold here, which I love (I know, I’m an oddball). Karen

So many beautiful trophy displays, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I have some silver .. but do not have a trophy 😦 They are so popular now! They look so pretty filled with flowers as a centerpiece or lined up in groups.
Your finds are so pretty! Nicely done:)

Thanks, Leslie. How’s your weather…ours is seasonably cold. I love it, so unusual for us to have what feels like true winter weather. 🙂 Karen

Karen,
Loved this post! For years I’ve wanted to start collecting trophies but didn’t dare because I already collect so many things. We have a friend who has a very nice collection – mainly car trophies – and they make a wonderful display.
I think my favorite of your trophies was the horse and rider one from the Bucket of Blood in Virginia City. Fantastic!

Thanks, Linda. Yes, I’m joining the party late on collecting these. Carla used to find them on eBay for less than $25 years ago, now it’s very challenging to find any for that price and usually they are much more. I hear you about collections…I’m frozen my* **collecting* for now…too much stuff! xo, Karen

Old trophies, horses, dogs and old books make for a winner in my opinion. Hey I like that quirky portrait on the bookcase! I LIKE the fact that it isn’t predictable. Also I bet no one walks in the door and says ~ Hey I have that portrait.~ I think I’ve reached a point in my life I just don’t care about perfection. I’ve really embraced the ~ when I get old I’m going to wear a purple hat. ~ I have several trophies too. I love your horse trophy. Had a few vintage dog show trophies…one said CHAMP…..I sold them 😦 I just didn’t have the right spot for them. As far as movie awards, I’m really out of it. I not a big movie goer. Lets just say if everyone was like me there wouldn’t be many/any rich movie stars. I can’t stand sitting there that long and rarely does the story hold my attention. I love the oldies but that’s about it. Again beautiful photos. Now I feel guilty and think I should pull out the silver polish.
Best,
Kathy

Kathy, LOL! Hey, I believe in the live and let live philosophy…no judgement here. I did think the portrait would have looked better by itself on the wall, but we all need to decorate for ourselves…what we love may not be what other’s love. That said, I’ve seen some of your home (from what you’ve shared) and I think it’s very pretty. 🙂 I’m at a standstill with collecting for now, I’m overstocked in every cupboard and closet. It’s time to pare down. I have a new daughter-in-law that doesn’t care for movies either. I’ve always been a huge fan so I always look forward to the academy awards show.

I love this look. I don’t actually have any, but could see buying a few. I like the idea of Spring bulbs planted in them. My husband has won some nice silver julep cup shooting trap and I use those on the dinner table with flowers in them.
Have a great weekend!

Phyllis, I can imagine how pretty your husband’s julep trophies look gracing the table. I have always liked julep cups and years ago Southern Accents did a feature on antique julep cups engraved with various notes of events or merit. They were so pretty. Enjoy your weekend. Karen

I feel like I have been living under a rock..I have never considered how beautiful trophies were and how they can be used in home decor. Those are just wonderful. I love having my eyes opened to new ideas!
Sadly we haven’t seen a single movie this year (or the last 3) unless you count animated movies. Ha! I remember my husband I would go to the theatre and see every single movie nominated for best movie, actor, actress and director.. We would print our lists and check them off as we went and ended up seeing movies we would have never heard of otherwise. Oh how life changes with a 3 year old.

Christina, Ahhh, yes, I so distinctly remember those days with great affection. They fly by too quickly…there’s always DVD rental. Have fun with your little guy, before you know they’re adults, married! (such fun at this age too). Karen

I love old trophies and only have a couple. I am on the lookout for more, but at the right price. Some are quite pricey. I love your horse trophy.
Karen B. said:
Hi Kim,
The funny thing is that the horse trophy has a missing ear (hardly noticeable) and was only $10. I’m with you, I love to find great bargains where trophies are concerned.

I love the shapes of the vintage trophies in your post. They look wonderful with bulbs or flowers and I especially like them grouped together. It makes we want to start a collection myself!
As for movie picks, this year has more than the usual number of excellent ones to choose from. I loved Lincoln and Life of Pi, but have always had a soft spot for musicals so I can’t leave out Les Miserables. It’ll be fun to see what happens…..

Hi Gretchen,
I really liked Les Miserables but boy has it gotten some bad reports of it being too long. I wouldn’t mind Silver Linings winning.

Karen….You know I love sterling presentation trophies with wonderful engraving. I have quite a few. I watched the Golden Globes and The Critics Choice Awards and loved seeing all the stars. I haven’t seen one single movie but want to see several, especially Argo.
Great post. You found some beautiful trophies.

Hi Rosemary, I believe I’ve seen a couple of your trophies and thought they were wonderful. I enjoyed the Golden Globes, thought Tina and Amy were hilarious. Argo was a wonderful movie. Hope you get to see a few of them before the Academy Awards show. Enjoy your week. Karen

Debby, LOL, nice to know it wasn’t just my little town! Champagne and paper whites, such good use of this vintage item. 🙂 Karen
