We have had a very mild spring and summer by most accounts, and by mild I mean it wasn’t that warm. That’s unusual for Southern California. It is August and it is summer so I’m going to embrace the what little heat we have had. Besides, I’ve been wanting to do this post on the topic of water features, from pools to ponds. So here goes…
Some people in my region depend on the ocean to cool them down. As a red head, the “beach / sunbathing” option left me some years ago…actually, it should have never been an option.
In light of the heat that usually hits this time of year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share some some of my favorite water features…mostly swimming pools, but there are a few reflecting pools and other images that will hopefully cool you down (if you’re experiencing hot weather), if only in your mind.
Wouldn’t this folly be wonderful in a backyard…of an estate?

So, what are you doing to stay cool this summer?

{WASPing through the country side}
Oh, and remember, when swimming it’s always wise to swim with someone (the buddy system)…
So what are you doing this summer, plenty of time in a pool or on a veranda sipping a cool drink?

I just can’t decide which pic is my favorite…..all being very good choices. But, in the end I must come down on the side of the golden puppy, as my golden looked just like that when he was my baby….er, puppy. Sheila

Sheila, I do love golden puppies and I love the images that have movement…is that the cutest? xo, Karen

Laughing so hard at the buddy system… I may need two buddies.
The photo of the pier gave me a pang of ugh… why is that not MY DOCK? And also, why can I see my neighbors? I need to move there immediately.

I agree, when I seen homes that are spaced so that you feel like you don’t have a neighbor I swoon. Then reality hits and I think, what if I fell and hit my head and they found me months later? 😀 Karen

Even though I can’t swim 🙂 I’d love to have a pool. Gorgeous photos!! Love that formal terraced garden with the maze…..think that one was designed by Russell Page. Karen, can you believe August is almost over? Some students are already back to school in our area. And traffic is picking up again in DC.

Loi, I can’t believe August is half over and we’re only now experiencing a small taste of summer. I only hope that doesn’t mean that come October, when I’m truly ready for autumn, it’s 90 degrees. Yes, a few of our friends kids have started back. Seems a little early but I think more of the schools are staggering their start and end times. Thanks for the info on the garden with the maze…I’ll look up his work. I love that garden. xo, Karen

Thanks for cooling me off! What I like about some of these pools is their more natural, darker color. Turquoise looks right in the tropics, but most of us don’t live down there. The best I can do is a blue plastic kiddie pool, which my boxer loves to splash in!

I had to laugh, our granddaughter is visiting and we bought her a blow up pool…I’m pretty sure I’ll have a couple of doggies that think it was purchased for them after her departure. I agree, the light turquoise pools are very tropical in feel but I always thought I’d like a darker finish that might look more like a pond than a pool. xo, Karen

Karen,
I’m not even a big fan of summer but this post made me want to go make myself a gin and tonic and sit by a pool – anywhere. Maybe I’d rather sit by the beach – especially if Daniel Craig stepped out of the surf!

That’s right, sitting on a beach, waiting for Daniel Craig to finish swimming, that would be cool! I also liked the picture of the two chairs on the lake, I’d join you for that gin and tonic. xo, Karen

Oh, perfectly timed post! I’m out in 90-degree heat (still) finishing up my patio. This morning my husband was walking around talking about how we “need” a pool. 0_o Right now, I’m grateful for a/c– I look about like the kitten & puppy in your first photos! 🙂

Keri, We haven’t had steaming weather this summer but on queue it’s warming up and the humidity is rising. I’ll be think like your husband, we need a pool! Karen

This post was perfectly timed for our sudden rise in humidity. The windows are open and the fans are running on high and I’m still hot! Your photos are starting to help me cool off. Add another chair to that dock so you, Linda and I can enjoy our gin and tonics in style!

Hi Gretchen, I’ll pick one up on the way home, you bring the limes and I’ll provide the gin and tonic! 😀 xo, Karen
