This isn’t my first post about mirrors, I really like the beauty they add to a room, large or small, mirrors and the frames around them are always lovely. In many instances they do double duty with the size enhancing of a room they offer.
{unknown}
But it wasn’t until I read my blog friend, Victoria’s {Restoring our 1890 Victorian} post about her “kingdom” mirror that I saw the impressive benefit a really big mirror adds to a room. This post is for you, Victoria. Just look at these mirrors, aren’t they fabulous?
{Restoring our 1890 Victorian ~ Kingdom Mirror}
A trumeau mirror is the ideal combination of art and reflection…here’s a DIY if you’re crafty and would like to try your hand at making your own. I would love to find an antique but I hear they are cost prohibitive. {Maybe Victoria can find one for me on Craigslist} Since it’s the search that I love I will continue to see if I can stumble upon a steal someplace.
A shelf with a mirror behind doubles your collections, right?
Is this a great mirror? I love the black paint on the wall, contrasting with a white framed mirror, tub and walls.
I am especially drawn to mirrors that have lost some of their reflection by aging. There’s something almost magical for me in mirrors that have aged this way.
This room is so light-filled and simple…the mirror adds light and the feeling of space, don’t you think? The clock is a favorite too.
Ah, the patina of the mirrors and candle sticks…yes, please.
This vanity mirror is being put to good use…it looks so nice with the mirrored vanity and trash container (under the vanity). In the reflection of the mirror you can see a diverging mirror.
The mirror below was once a door…I think this is such a great idea.
This looks like something out of Versailles.
Do you have a favorite mirror? So on to the fun part, a present to one lucky reader…
My birthday is January 27th and I want to host my first giveaway. I’ve thought long and hard about just what I’d like to give to one lucky reader.
I lean toward English country / traditional design, but there’s always been a hint of French country influence in my decorating. Charles Faudree, who lost his battle with cancer this past November, was master of combining the two seamlessly.
A few years ago I was introduced to Carolyn Westbrook, “The French Inspired Home” through a blog site that loves all things French. {This is where I would install a link if I could remember which blog site it was…apologies}. So when I learned, a little late, of Westbrook’s newest book, Through the French Door: Romantic Interiors Inspired by Classic French Style, I thought it would be fun to offer a giveaway to my readers who may not know of her talents and would love to be inspired by her work.
To enter, simply leave a comment. I will randomly select a winner and announce it in my post on Wednesday, January 29th.
Happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well.

Happy early birthday to you! You share a bday with my father-in-law. Perhaps we should all go out to dinner together! 🙂 Love all the mirrors, but I would not like to take a bath next to that big one. ha ha. Victoria’s world wide famed story is hilarious. My taste in mirrors runs towards more simple ones. We used to have a huge ornate gilt framed one over the mantel. It just didn’t seem to suit the room, so now we have a huge one framed simply in a classic black frame. I love anything though that adds light to a room, and that is exactly what mirrors do. Lovely giveaway!!

Kelly, I’m in, let your father in law know we’ll all be celebrating at one of those great spots you’ve shared in some of your posts! 🙂 I have to agree, I do love mirrors but our decor style doesn’t really work with anything too ornate. I do love Victoria’s mirror for her 1890 Victorian home, it fits. 🙂 xo, Karen

Oooh, I love these mirror ideas!
I am one of those girls who loves mirrors! In a previous house I had a kitchen sink on an interior wall, so I put a mirror over the sink to give the impression of a mirror. One can do so many decorating tricks with mirrors. My home would love to be graced with your mirror giveaway! Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sheila, I remember a favorite kitchen image from a magazine that had a mirror over the sink…love the look, always wondered if it would be a battle with splashes of water and such. Good luck, I’ll announce a winner next Wednesday. xo, Karen

I am slowly coming to the conclusion that I am going to need a bigger house. And a staff to clean it. (Because while I need more room for more stuff, I do NOT want to actually do any more cleaning…)
Obviously I love all of these pictures…(Mine, ahem,) but the thing I was actually MOST jealous of is the small fire grate/Basket (?) With the feet… Second photo down. LOVE.
Any big plans for your birthday? Aside from giving us, your loyal readers, presents?
Karen B. said:
It’s the little details, isn’t it? I loved that fire grate too. This is why I entertain friends and family, it forces me to clean like a crazy person, otherwise, while I like things to be tidy, dust doesn’t bother me so much! 🙂 Yes, I’m the queen of month-long birthday celebrations. My friends tolerate this and manage to invite me to lunch/coffee/dinner in celebration…one year I literally was still celebrating in February. Pretty fun, right. Will you join us? Karen

Leslie, Have you every found great antiques on craigslist? Like my blog friend, Victoria. I keep telling her I’ll have to move to the Philly area so I can find a few of the great buys she discovers on craigslist.
We’re still experiencing unusually warm weather…hate to say it, but I wish it would rain. xo, Karen

Happy birthday, Karen! My favorite mirrors are also those whose silvering is losing its luster! When I was a little kid, we didn’t have a lot, and my parents started making use of cast-off family antiques (which now fill my house). I remember them not wanting a mirror because the silver was going bad, but even as a child I thought it had such character. To this day I love old, beat-up mirrors!
Karen B. said:
Sheila, How fortunate to enjoy some of your family antiques, especially a mirror or two that has started showing age and character. I have a spot in my house that could benefit from an aging, not overly gilded, antique mirror. The search is always 2/3 of the fun for me. xo, Karen

I’m not a blogger but I’m hooked on GH&P and Victorias’s blog. Such fun and so many beautiful pictures. I’m looking for a round wood mirror. I have no place to put it and don’t know why I want one but there you have it. Hope you birthday is a reflection of all the happiness you give to others.
Karen B. said:
Thanks, Carol. I could see a round mirror on one of your walls…I even like the Restoration Hardware antique reproduction mirrors, seems to me they have a couple that are round-ish. xo, Karen

I’ve been looking for a mirror for my entryway for quite a while now. Thanks for the good ideas! Also, sadly, I wasn’t aware that Charles Faudree had passed away. I have a couple of his books, and always admired his style.

Ann, I was saddened by the news of his passing. He was probably the first designer I followed. It was so many years ago when the L.A. Times featured a small piece on him in their HOME, in the Sunday edition—it’s long gone but like you, I have a few of his books. I met him at a book signing and he was such a Southern gentleman.

Thank you for your lovely blog and all the beautiful pictures. I recently started reading blogs and obviously didn’t know what I was missing!
I just purchased a large distressed teal-colored mirror with a French flavor which I fell in love with, and luckily my husband likes it too. It is a fabulous addition to our living room. Your article on mirrors was so timely.
Best wishes for your birthday.

I too have a great mirror in the dining room which was one of the few salvageable pieces from our house fire 10 years ago. I knew I had to find a great place for it in the new house and I am so happy it looks great in the dining room

Hi,
I followed you here after reading your comment on the Polo House blog. I am a Southern California resident too and also concerned about our strange winter heat a lack of rain . It probably seems odd to those enduring the severe winter cold in other states, but this creating serious problems too…especially with water.
Your mirror post is lovely and I do like mirrors. Love to see them used as you have shown here is such wonderful ways. I am looking for a big mirror for my dining room so your pictures really inspired me.

Hi Adrienne,
I’m so happy to meet you. I do feel badly for the folks struggling with the polar vortex in the east, but I’m still hoping we get some rain before spring.
Good luck with your search for a wonderful mirror for your dining room.

I LOVE EVERYTHING FRENCH. We went to Paris (for the first time) this past year. I was in heaven! I loved Charles Faudree and so sad to hear of his passing. I received a book of his this past Xmas as a gift. I would love to win this book too! Thank you so much for sharing your love of mirrors. I’ve always loved mirrors and wondered if I had too many in my home, until this post. Just beautiful!!!!

Hi Donna,
I’ve only been to Paris once, but it’s on my list to revisit. There’s so much to see. I do love French style and Charles Faudree was always such a great inspiration for his style of blending French and English furnishings.
