Backyard buildings, cottages, potting sheds, play houses and the like have always held great appeal for me.
Maybe a small brick structure to house the croquet set. 😀
Some years ago I worked for a home builder who participated in an annual event held for a charitable cause, where 5-6 home builders would volunteer their services to build “play houses” for auction. The builders were so creative and often these houses would auction for several thousand dollars. Below is an example…you can see why they were popular, there was no detail left undone.
I suspect Project Playhouse planted the seed but I’m not even particular about whether its a decked out playhouse or a chicken coop (which our city doesn’t allow, they allow the coop, not the chickens). I just love the idea of a structure in the backyard where I could sit and read, store a few small garden tools and Olivia and I could play tea party.
As I’m sure you are aware, chicken coops have hit the mainstream. Williams Sonoma even offers one.
This coop rivals some homes I’ve seen…maybe my fair city would allow this one.
There isn’t any room in our back yard for a structure, not really. This is Southern California, many yards are the size of a postage stamp. But since I’ve always liked the idea, I’ve done what I usually do…set up a folder and saved images I find on the internet and blog sites. It’s like tearing pages from a magazine, only less clutter.
Wouldn’t you love a place where you could sleep in the backyard, in cool comfort during warm summer nights, yet feel like you are surrounded by nature?
There are coyotes in our area that are not shy about jumping fences, but with doors on my backyard retreat I think I’d be safe.
This cottage structure looks like it may have been built finding salvaged items…I love the idea of building a little garden shed using old windows, hinges and doors.
{Inside Story}
Our Austin son build a structure in the ample backyard of their first home. He used to work from home so this offered the quiet of an off-site office with the convenience of close proximity to the main house. I don’t have a picture of the structure but this (below) reminds me of it…
Now, if I lived on a lake or some other body of water, this would be the “backyard” structure I’d be longing for…

This simple structure is probably more my speed…doesn’t it look cute?
…or even something as small and simple as this…
I’d probably only need enough room for a chair and a box of Olivia’s toys where we could pretend to cook and enjoy a snack.
When there is room for more, this is what I lean towards…my fellow garden enthusiasts will agree, wouldn’t this be wonderful?

The truth is, it isn’t so much the structure as it is who happens to reside (pretends to reside, in this case) there…
Do you have a playhouse, garden shed, backyard cottage?
I’m joining in the fun at Art @ Home with my post…it makes me happy so it should qualify as My Happy List.

Love, love, love… did I mention I love? ALL of these.
Also, even more than the structures themselves, I LOVE THE IDEA of not seeing any of my neighbors… because most of those garden sheds/structures exist in a paradise of not-having-to-look-at-your-neighbor’s-driveway.

Victoria, Have Paul build you one…just think of the wonderful old windows, doors and shutters you could find on craigslist for such a structure. Oh, and then see if he’ll allow you guys to vacation in California while he builds me one! 😀

Hi Karen…all of these are so cute! I would love to have a guest house in the back..

Julie, It would be so much fun to have one that could actually accommodate a guest. We have a strict homeowners association, they’d undoubtedly ban such a great idea. 😀 Karen

Good Morning Karen:)
These are all beautiful little retreats and YES I’d love to have one. It would be a little secret getaway for children AND adults. We have coyote too .. and bear, so I’d have to make the place really secure:) One of our neighbors has build a playhouse for their kids and it looks almost like a little guest cottage. Unfortunately I never see anyone using it! xxL

Leslie, I’ve always wondered if that might be the case, kind of like swimming pools. Several friends complain that they just don’t use it! Still, I think I would. 😀 Karen

Wouldn’t it be great, a comfy chair, the cottage under the shade of a large tree? I’ve been daydreaming! xo, Karen

HI! Just moved and have a cottage playhouse and dreaming of how to decorate it. So many ideas but how do I decide what is me? Art studio, flowers, victorian, reading retreat? Thanks for the post. Bobbe

Bobbe,
It sounds like a fun problem to have! Let me know what you decide. 😀 Thanks for stopping by, so nice to meet you.

Hi Karen,
This post brought back so many wonderful memories of spending countless hours in my friend’s playhouse when I was young. The playhouse wasn’t much by today’s standards and I was too tall to stand up in it, but to us it was a palace! Now that I live on 5 acres of wooded land, there’s plenty of space for a playhouse and I hope to be able to share it with grandchildren one day. Thanks for the memories!

Your grounds would be ideal for a playhouse, and I bet Tom could build it himself. How fun! xo, Karen

I would LOVE to have a sweet little garden structure, but as you said, California yards are postage stamp size. We live at the beach where we can reach out our dining room window and our neighbor can reach out her front door and we can hold hands. Not really that close, but almost. But, it is fun to imagine and thanks to Pinterest put them on a dream board.

Ah, a fellow Californian. We’re a stones throw from Newport Beach ourselves. You’re so right, Pinterest has really given us daydreamers a playground. 😀
Thanks for stopping by, so nice to meet you.

Fun post, Karen! The structure that you say is “more your speed” is similar to the playhouse my dad built for my 7th birthday. Now we have a greenhouse off the end of my old Model T garage, built out of salvaged wood casement windows. My favorite recycled outbuildings are at http://bobbowlingrustics.homestead.com. They’re always my favorite exhibit at the annual garden show. Someday … next house … I aspire to own one!!

D’Arcy, Oh my, now you’ve done it. I’ll spend the next bit of time pouring over the Bob Bowling site. I could love the small, simple structure that first appears when you jump to the site from your link. What a sweet daddy. We have some friends in the neighborhood that built a wonderful play house for their twin daughters and once the girls were grown and gone, they converted it to a mini retreat for backyard entertaining. A greenhouse would probably be the most practical structure for me and my hobby, maybe in the next house. xo, Karen

I don’t have a playhouse but I want one! I would truly love a greenhouse. All of the structures in your post are so charming.
Karen, I think you need the coyote-proof summer house in this post…..it is so pretty!
This post is drool-worthy, and I’m so happy you shared it in My Happy List linky!

Thanks, RJ. I’m with you, a greenhouse would really make the most sense for me and my love of gardening, but our granddaughter draws on my thoughts that I NEED a play house for her, even though she lives a 2 1/2 hour plane ride away! 😀 Thanks for making me happy with your happy parties. xo, Karen

I would love to have a little potting shed or conservatory, but like you, I have so little room for one where I am now. I have a Pinterest board going, full of wonderful conservatory-style inspiration. I’ve thought that maybe I could squeeze in a little lean-to style greenhouse, but too much shade is a problem too.
I especially love the chicken coops! Wouldn’t that be fun!
Karen B. said:
Keri, A chicken coop would be so much fun. I think a greenhouse for starting plants and such would be great too. Karen

I’ve always wanted a small building at the back of our yard, but there have been too many projects around here for my husband to tackle anything more. Love all of these – especially the boathouse at Blackberry Farm. We have blueprints for a guest house/playhouse/workshop that match our home in style, so maybe if we ever have grandchildren my husband will build it.
Karen B. said:
Kelly, You are so lucky to have such a handy husband. My dad was that way…my sweet, Mr. B., not so much. 😀 xo, Karen

The first time I watched Disney’s Pollyanna I fell in love with the conservatory in her aunt’s Victorian house. I decided (I was probably ten at the time) that someday I would have one filled with palms and ferns and a table and chairs for a proper tea party. Fifty-some years later it remains a unfulfilled dream. Now I’d settle for a small greenhouse in the backyard! Until I read your post I had almost completely forgotten about my childhood wish. The photos you chose are so much better than I could have imagined!

Gretchen, That is such a great memory, I’ll have to re-watch Pollyanna…it’s been years. I figure I may never have that back yard structure, but thanks to blog sites and the internet I can day dream. xo, Karen
