As some of you may remember, plaid is my favorite color, and, no surprise, I’m not alone. “Plaid Day” is May 18th, but there’s a new celebration of plaid as well. Plaiddurday is the first Friday of every October, so Plaidurday this year is October 3, 2014. Since I love plaid, I figure I might just celebrate both. It is a holiday, right?
Plaid Day, May 18th, is the day where the sheer magnificence and general wonderfulness of plaid is celebrated around the world. Plaid Day is celebrated by wearing plaid on your person. Those who refuse to adorn themselves in the Sacred Flannel are duly sacrificed. Serious Plaidies indulge in tribal plaid face paint and the ceremonial burning of a kilt. Common phrases used on Plaid Day include, “I’m plaid with that,” “You’re TOTALLY plaiding today,” and “That’s SO plaid.”
I used to want to collect Tartanware. After spotting so few pieces at the antique stores I frequented, and noticing the prices, I decided I would do without a collection.
I saved the best for last…an old Elle Decor feature on Glen Feshie Lodge. Never did so much plaid look so great!
I realize plaid isn’t for everyone, especially today with our Scandinavian influenced neutral palate with lots of gray and weather worn woods, but a room like this wins my heart every time.

I cannot say I cared about plaid before reading this post, but the above quote pleased me to no end… I always like to align myself with people who feel strongly about random irrelevant things. The stranger the better.
Then, I spent at least 20 minutes trying to find those plaid high heels, because now that I have seen them, I understand what my life has been missing.
p.s.- Not sure that Paul would be enthusiastic about the men’s flannel pants, but I am pretty sure that Elvis would look fantastic in a jaunty flannel cap.

Yay, another convert. I did like the heels, they would certainly make a statement when worn to the upcoming blog conference! Speaking of which, there are blog sites that post about plaid exclusively.
You searched for the heels, I wanted the paint! How did they even make that image? Computer magic. I was wondering what I should get Elvis for her birthday…this settles it. xo, Karen

Hi Debra, Here’s the deal, there’s Plaid Day and then there’s National Plaid Day, which is April 6th. Since I missed that day I figured there’s always room for more plaid so I jumped on the the plain ol’ Plaid Day. 🙂
I think we’re kindred spirits as Anne of Green Gables would say! Get to work on making your client’s yards beautiful! Wish I were there to join in. xo, Karen

I’m plaid with that. I’m a sucker for plaid throws, myself, like those in Glen Feshie Lodge. I liked your line about collecting Tartanware.

Vicki, 🙂 I can still remember when first I saw the magazine article in Elle Decor featuring Glen Feshie Lodge. I wanted everything in that room! I’ve since lightened my look a bit, but the thought of being in that room, cozy with a throw and a fire in the fireplace, held such appeal for me. Karen

Karen,
Loved all the fantastic plaids — especially that hottie in the tartan pants! The rooms were beautiful and made me realize that I need a touch of plaid in my own home. Thanks for another wonderful post.

Linda, You know, I think I’ve even seen the occasional plaid throw in a country French styled room! 🙂 xo, Karen

I will be sure to wear plaid on May 18th! What I really covet in the photos is that adorable little carved wooden Scottie dog! –D’Arcy

D’Arcy, It’s the little things…I love that Scottie too. I used to have a Scottie dog. MacKenzie was a great dog. Hope you are staying cool up there, we’ve hit the high nineties all this week, ugh. xo, Karen

I love this look Karen and it always makes we want to add equestrian accessories. It’s also really pretty around the holidays. Yes.. that little Scottie goes perfectly in this setting .. not sure how the Tartan look goes with the Star Wars dude;):):)
Karen B. said:
Leslie, It’s just the Scots way of making plaid a universal ‘must have’, even in a galaxy far, far away! 🙂 I agree, the equestrian and plaid thing is tempting, but I try to remember that I live in sunny (too warm these days) Southern California, not Great Britain! xo, Karen

Mad for plaid, indeed! Such a lovely look – so cozy, warm and beautiful. And, even better when layered. Cheers!!
Karen B. said:
Thanks, Loi. Cozy is always welcome, but as we are experiencing sweltering heat here in SoCal , warm won’t be desired until October, maybe. 🙂 xo, Karen

Do you remember that our Mammoth condo featured two red and green plaid sofas? We couldn’t think of a more suitable fabric for a mountain retreat! I have loved plaid for as long as I can remember. I’m pretty sure I had that plaid thermos and lunch box when I was in elementary school. I’m so happy to hear that there is a special day to celebrate plaid!

I do remember the Mammoth condo and the inviting warmth the room imparted no matter the weather was one of my earliest ideas that plaid was going to be a favorite! xo, Karen
