Happy Wednesday! How are you? Is anyone, besides me, shocked that we’re 10 days and counting into the month of March?! Yikes, slow down, father time. On that note, daylight savings time is here…so we’ll get an extra hour of daylight. {I’m not sure I’m happy about this, it’s coming too soon and I’m not ready for the warm weather that usually follows. I know the east is overdue for some warmth. Can I send you some of ours?}
Still, you can always make room for pretty porch lights on the front of your home, right?
Oh how I’d like to call this stone beauty home!
I want to talk about (and share) some pretty porch lights. It’s the little things that contribute most to a first impression, don’t you think? Where a home’s entrance is concerned, porch lights {or garage door lights, as Mr. B. likes to call them when they flank the garage door} can not only capture your attention, they can steal the show. Lighting adds so much to the front of a house.
Our porch lights have been up a long time. We had to have an electrician install the porch light on the right side of the garage. California tract houses, you gotta love them. They put a porch light on the left side of the house and one by the front door, but called it a day after that. Symetry, people!
This isn’t the greatest picture but the light on the right is the one we had to add. The one on the left, hidden in this picture by the ivy around it, matches the one we added as well as the one up by the front door.

Oh, to live in a stone house with this front door surround!
{tumblr}
My personal leanings seem to be towards a pair of lanterns, but Kevin (our younger son) and Sarah have these beauties on the front of their house and I really like the way they look with their paint color and the architectural details of their home.
The details of the fixture and wonderful oil-rubbed finish, coupled with the glass makes these especially stunning. {Good job, Sarah!}
I notice there are a lot of pictures in this post with black doors. I believe I’m partial to dark doors on light houses! 🙂
{unknown}
Even this impressive entrance is enhanced with beautiful entry lighting…by all accounts Ralph Lauren always gets it right. I agree!
…and his Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles location
I digress, Ralph Lauren stores aren’t what this post is about. It’s about the inviting appeal of porch lights on residential abodes.
This wall lantern on a West Palm Beach home in Florida is attractive. I like the back plate and the unique design of the light itself. {I also love the stone dog!}
The overhead lantern in addition to the small lanterns on either side of the front door and side lights is ideal for this large front porch. So pretty with the transom windows, and {ahem} another dark door.
A simple fixture on this shingled house suits it very well. Don’t you love shingled houses? Charming.
The French Country house below might be my favorite in this group. Donald Lococo Architects did an amazing job with the exterior elements of the home.
Do you have a preference when it comes to porch lights? You’ll use it 1 hour less now that we’re in Daylight Savings Time, unless you live in Arizona, Hawaii or Indiana!

oh that first image karen!!! but i see myself living happily ever after in the last.
as a freak of nature….when i drive thru neighborhoods i am always judging peoples lighting….(a minor game to occupy myself). most are much too small, take a look. oversized is always better
and i too, even in chicago, am not interested in the warm weather headed our way (a real freak right?)

Debra, Scale is something I am always trying to nail. I do find that most (including me) tend to think too small. Let’s keep the whole *prefer fall/winter* thing to ourselves. I’m already admonished for loving a cool, gray day. 🙂 xo, Karen

I have followed you blog for a while and just love it. I was surprised this mroring to see a house I walk by everyday. I live one street over from your son. We bought the house a few months ago and are redoing it. I love their house !!! Great style but now I know it runs in the family.

Rachel,
What a small world. I love your little community of homes. My best friend used to live on Via de Anza in the same floor plan Kevin and Sarah live in. Thanks for your kind words. Good luck with your work on your home. It’s so much fun to stamp a home with your own signature, isn’t it? 🙂

That stone house with the black urns is so pretty! I too lean towards lanterns Karen. Gorgeous entries and lots of inspiration. (..yes, can’t believe March is cruising right by!) xxL

Leslie, Wouldn’t a stone house be great. Of course I’d want it to be old stone with the interior fully rewired, replumbed and all of the modern conveniences to go along with it! 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your week…spring is right around the corner. xo, Karen

That first house… Sigh. We are catching up on this past season of Downton Abbey so I am particularly enamored with old/stone/fancy.
And – NO! I really cannot believe we are nearly halfway through March. We had a giant snowstorm last week? 10 days ago? That made it feel like it was still winter. But yesterday it went up to nearly 60°. Spring, I love you!

I envy you not having completed this season of DA. I’m saddened I’ve seen all of the episodes (twice) for the season. The good news is I’ve written a list of replacement programs from the bloggers that are titling their posts “Missing Downton Abbey”.
Have you started your dahlia seeds yet? Too early?

Hi Karen- Hard to know which is my favorite, you picked so many beautiful choices. Maybe that white house with the dark green door? (Light house, dark door! I actually have that- too funny.) I love that symmetrical look with planters under the lights.
I agree, the time change came too soon. No fun getting up when it’s still dark outside!

Vicki, I love white houses with dark doors, why am I not surprised you have that…what about the lanterns? 🙂 This is the first day I didn’t wake up feeling exhausted…I’m not sure why time changes always throw me off. At least we don’t have to deal with the next one until the first Sunday in November! xo, Karen

Such beautiful entryways, Karen! I always enjoy looking at lighting fixtures in home improvement stores. There are so many possibilities! Our Arts & Crafts style bungalow has lighting fixtures that follow its straight, simple lines. I’ve always been partial to red doors! Although our front door is dark wood, our back door is red. So warm and welcoming! Hope you are enjoying the first week of Daylight Savings Time. ♡

Hi Dawn, Now that I’ve adjusted to the new time I seem to be better. For some reason those first few days were difficult. I felt like I’d been sleep deprived, but I really hadn’t. I love red doors. I really like the large variety of porch lights that are available in all price ranges. The finish on ours has faded a bit but I think I can polish them and they may seem a little less worn. Arts and Crafts style is so pretty, hope you’ll share some pics sometime on your blog. Enjoy the rest of your week, spring is right around the corner. Karen

Hi Karen! Love all of these. Your house is so charming. And your son and daughter-in-law have wonderful porch light taste as well. If you ever need to know how to do anything, I think looking toward a Ralph Lauren store is the way to go!!! I’ve always wanted to have gas lanterns, but, as of yet, that hasn’t happened! Maybe next house? We’re having a warm day today, and I think you sent it! Thank you!!! xo Kristy
Karen B. said:
Kristy, That has always been a favorite of mine, gas lit lanterns. I’ve seen a few around our area (not my specific neighborhood) but adjacent areas. I agree 100%, Ralph Lauren really never disappoints. I hope our sunshine made it your way, I’ve been giving Mother Nature some instruction on spreading the sunshine a bit better than she had been of late! 🙂 xo, Karen

Karen,
I’ve always loved how beautiful lighting fixtures can enhance a home’s entry area. I’m also partial to the lantern look and like what we chose for our home 17 years ago. My favorite of all the stunning pics in your post is the French home at the end. Oh! to have an entry like that!

Linda, It’s fun to have a few dream images in each post, right? xo, Karen

Your son’s lamps are outstanding! We need to find a new porch fixture for our bungalow. I haven’t looked too hard yet, but most are wall-mounts, and we need a ceiling mount. Plus, right now we have an adapter with an outlet out there, into which we plug three heated kitty shelters. Summer is coming (yay, DST!!) but in the winter our kitty friends’ comfort takes precedence! –D’Arcy
Karen B. said:
That makes perfect sense. None of this decorative stuff should take precedence over an animals safety and comfort. How are your adopted cats? Do they still have trust issues? I know you and your hubby will come up with a viable idea for the porch lights that will be wonderful. I’m so envious of folks that can perform DIY. We do the minimal handy stuff. Painting and such.

Dash, Dot, and Ditto come to see us every day, and sometimes sleep in the shelters. The only time I can touch them is when I’m finger-feeding them Fancy Feast, and then Ditto is the only one who will truly let me pet her (no Fancy Feast, no petting!) So they are wild as ever, yet they come when I call them! They’re so sweet … thanks for asking!
Karen B. said:
I’m so happy you and your hubby adopted them, I’m sure they would not be as healthy and happy if you weren’t in their lives.

Gretchen, I do like doors with color, I’ve even thought red doors with a pair of lanterns would be fun…not in this house, maybe the next! xo, Karen
