Happy December everyone! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving week with family. I caught a bug and as a result I’m so behind with my Christmas ‘to do’ list. Being laid up I’ve had time to be inspired by all of the creative forces in blogland and I’ve decided to keep it simple this year. I’m sharing a few images of my own home last year and showing you the inspiration for this year.
Last year I hung this rustic garland over our french doors in the dining room. I think I’ll do that again. The silver colored snowflakes were purchased at Crate & Barrel’s after Christmas sale a few years back.
Each year I’ve had a centerpiece made for our dining room table using the bronze deer I picked up while on vacation in Aspen years ago. This year I’m going to try to make it myself using fresh greens, I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂
Our kitchen bay window usually has some kind of live plant, last year I adorned an ivy wreath with some frosted red berries (faux). I’m not sure what I’ll put in the window this year. I have a nice container with english ivy in it and I may just add a few cyclamen and be done.
I found this stag graphic on The Graphic Fairy and printed him on vellum using sepia colored print, then I placed him over some old sheet music I had to create this deer vignette. The deer are antiques I’ve collected over the years. I’m not sure where I’ll display him this year.
Here is how our tree has looked the last 2 years. I believe it will look pretty much the same this year. If you’ve ever thought about dramatically changing the look of your tree, what do you do with all the ornaments you’ve collected along the way, not to mention the expense of buying mostly new, right?
So here are some simple rooms I’ve admired. They look understated but still seem very Christmasey to me…in a grown up way.
I know this image has been around a long time…sadly I no longer have the source (let me know if you do, please) But the unadorned cedar garland, and the wonderful fresh flower arrangement are beautiful to me. I like the simple silver ornaments in the stacks of little pots. The stone animal and the bulbs sprouting in the concrete bowl, all create the mood I’d like to strive for.
How simply lovely is this room. Yes, I know, the chandelier and overall room design makes it a great room no matter what season it is, but you have to admit, this is a classic case of less being a whole lot more.
A Christmas tree, a wreath and a cozy feel to this room makes it complete for me. {By the way, we are empty nesters, if I had youngsters at home I’d be decking the halls with all the glitter and popcorn garlands I could lay may hands on!} 🙂
If you’ve read my blog for any time, you know that English country style pulls at my heart strings. This room is one of my favorites.
I’m loving this trend towards natural, even a little rustic, ways of setting the table. The tree slices really lend themselves to the mood of Christmas and this table. What do you think?
I plan on baking pumpkin bread to give to friends and neighbors.
I guess getting a late start has slowed my pace a bit, just a bit. I want to keep it simple this year, not go over the top and enjoy good friends and family.
How are decorating for the holidays this year?

Karen, the photos are SO inspiring! I love a simple Christmas too, and it’s the little details that make the whole atmosphere gentle and down to earth. GREAT CHOICES! Anita

Good morning! Simplifying Christmas can be challenging sometimes. My sentiment takes over and I find it easy to keeping layering, but this year I’ve kept the brakes on. I think I’ve reached a *Christmas mood*, while not having every ribbon and decorative item out on display. Thank you for your visit, I always enjoy! Happy holiday season, my friend. Karen

Oh it is no fun being sick for the holidays! A double whammy of feeling bad and feeling way behind. I hope you are over it and re-energized. Your photo choices here are beautiful and peaceful – just what we need this season. Peace. I seem to be decorating very slowly this year…not sure how much I will get done on my to-do list…but I am working on it. A crew of elves would be nice!

Hi Kelly, I’m feeling better, thank you. I’ve made up for some of my lost time being sick so I only have to hang ornaments and I’ll be finished! Phew! Yes, elves would be helpful. Would you mind sending me a crew when you’re finished with them? 🙂 xo, Karen

Our tree is standing bare as well! I hope to get some ornaments on it this week. I hope we have a little longer between Thanksgiving and Christmas next year. Happy Christmas to you and yours. xo, Karen

Karen you and I are on the same wavelength. We just got back into town after back-to back- holiday festivities and I am still getting my house put back together following our new wood floors going down. So I am going with the ‘Less is More’ approach, I even changed my tree without buying anything new (except a 99 cent pack of thrift store gold ornaments ) I was just too tired to lug out all our Christmas boxes down and it turns out that I already had lots of white, silver and gold from a holiday tablescape from a few years ago. So in response to your question, that’s how I changed my tree out. I used what I already had. Also I love every one of your inspiration photos….wonder if it’s my age, but I’m truly craving simplicity and peace these days. I’m so glad you’ve got your health back, I think our physical health is our biggest blessing…hugs,
Leslie

Leslie, Less is more, and feeling pretty good about it. 🙂 I rarely get colds or flu so this one not only caught me by surprise, but it seemed to slow my pace. Irritating. I now appreciate the wellness I’ve enjoyed for quite a few years. No more taking that for granite. Happy Christmas to you and your family. xo, Karen

The flaming-urn-inside-an-already-enviable-fireplace is making me rethink my holiday strategy.
Glad you enjoyed your Thanksgiving… better to be sick BETWEEN the holidays rather than on one of them!!
Be sure you post photos of your DIY centerpiece! I’m curious to see how it turns out… I didn’t have floral foam for mine, and I was meaning to ask you how long your greens stay fresh. Mine are hanging in there, but might need replacing before Christmas actually gets here!
Karen B. said:
Hi Victoria, I know, right? That incredible fireplace and the clever use of an urn to burn coal(?), love it. My greens on my centerpiece last a little longer than just a fresh wreath brought indoors mainly because I use that “florist foam” that you soak for 24 hours and then poke all the greens into it. I’m going to try to get some pics of the centerpiece this weekend. It turned out okay, but I’m not sure how they normally cover the base so thoroughly. If you’re sitting at the table you can see the green base that holds the foam. Still, it was easy to duplicate what my florist had done. In addition, he used to charge $25 and it was up to $75, so I felt like it was a good way to save $50!!! I love your decorations for Christmas. xo, Karen

Hi Karen, Looks like you’re well set for a beautiful, nature-inspired Christmas. I like the idea of printing on vellum- it has just the right frosty look. Does your bronze deer have a name, like Redfern? I know you’ll create just the right centerpiece to complement him.
I need to look for some white cyclamen now. I love that look. Thanks for all the pretty inspiration today!

Hi Vicki, Thanks! I should name my reindeer print…maybe Bucky? 🙂 Have a wonderful holiday. May 2016 be a peaceful year. xo, Karen

So happy that you are bouncing back to good health, Karen! So much inspiration in all of these photos! The beautiful dining room with the chandelier, simple evergreen boughs on the mantle, and the simple, unadorned wreath truly makes me feel calm and peaceful. Simple and perfect! I think you will really enjoy a simple Christmas this year! I decorated inside and the front porch in our cozy, country style again this year… but it took me a few extra days. Retirement brings the blessings of the gift of time ~ especially lovely during my favorite time of year! Warm hugs! ♡

Dawn, Time truly is precious, isn’t it? I long for more of it this time of year, time to lounge around wrapping, reading, sipping cocoa and preparing baked goods for friends and family. Sigh. 🙂 Have a very Happy Christmas! xo, Karen

I applaud you for making your dining table decoration. I’m sure you’ll find lots of local greenery to inspire you. Please do show us what you come up with.
I adore the photo of the English room, especially the small tree. That particular cultivar is wonderful to hang decorations upon as the branches have plenty of space between.
The deer vignette and clever use of the velum deer is divine. Well done!
I’m keeping it simple too this year, but that is nothing new for me.
Best of luck with your decorating and I hope you find the energy to complete it all on time Karen.

CD, Thank you so much, nice compliments from someone who I consider to have wonderful taste—very satisfying. 🙂 I plan to take pictures of my centerpiece this weekend. Natural light in the dining room is a challenge so I have to be home so that I can capture all the natural light there is. I was pleased with the outcome and while it may need some tweaks next year, I’m happy to tackle it again. Karen

The deer centerpiece looks fantastic and so does your tree. The garland above the French doors is understated and stunning. Love the snowflakes!
Hope you kick that bug soon!
