What better way to relax a home and the soul than to welcome the outdoors in? In a world that seems to move faster every day, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor connection is one way to take a deep breath. Living inside and out in an antidote to stress. (Country French/Fall Winter 2012 – Meredith Specials Magazine)
In Southern California it’s pretty easy, most of the year, to transition between outdoors and in with outdoor patio/porch space, courtyard, or atrium. Weather makes it not only desirable but doable as well.
I believe the trend toward making the outdoor space around our houses resemble and live like a room that you could expect to see inside a home, has hit the nation over the past 10 or 15 years, so it’s easy to get the materials and furnishings that make outdoor living a luxury most can afford.
I know spring has probably arrived for all of us by now (she was a little reluctant coming to the dance this year)! So, I am offering some outdoor living spaces where we can entertain friends, wind down after a long work week, sip something…
Our backyard area under the trees (above)—we created this space because the trees offer shade pretty much all day long and it’s the coolest spot to sit on a hot day, besides, the grass needed more sun to thrive in this spot, the pea gravel never complains. We used pea gravel in place of concrete, it’s very comfortable to walk on and was a lot less money than concrete.
If money were no object…

My friend Cayley has one of the best courtyards. It’s protected from wind on all sides and they have a beautiful fireplace and fountain to provide extra comfort and a relaxing vibe…
This is our atrium (below) taken this spring.
{Kevin (son #2) and Sarah (DIL) bought a house that had this space (above) in place when they moved in, there are a couple of large Alder trees that provide shade and it’s always relaxing to sit there and visit. Sarah always has a bouquet of fresh flowers on the table, added ambiance and charm!
I love the star pendant lights on this porch (below).
This barely qualifies as outdoors. Still, I love the fireplace and the high, beamed ceiling. It would be fun to sit in this outdoor room rain or shine.
{Amelia Handegan via Southern Accents (some years ago)…thanks, Kelly}
My favorite outdoor room, the porch that Meryl Streep sat on in the movie Out of Africa. I don’t think this porch was actually in Africa, but it’s beautiful with its bead board ceiling and the ceiling fan and shutters.
As the British would say (if you’re still waiting for Spring’s arrival), stiff upper lip old girl, it will show up eventually.

Some of these outdoor spaces are nicer than my inside ones. And wouldn’t need to be vacuumed (my least favorite chore).
Our outdoor space is kind of shabby. Not in the chic way, either. It doesn’t help that I insist on buying “vintage” (Paul says junk for him to fix) patio furniture. In theory I’ll scrape it down and repaint. In reality, it looks exactly the same as when I got it.

You *are *chic then, chippy paint, rusty metal, that is so NOW. 😀 Besides, I’ve seen your vintage finds and would go with those as well if I had one modicum of patience for the search process required!
I agree, some of these rooms hardly qualify as outdoor spaces, more like family rooms without walls. xo, Karen

These are all beautiful spaces. I am a big fan of porches, and yours with the blue is very pretty! The photo of the porch with the stacked stone fireplace is an Amelia Handegan room that was featured years ago in Southern Accents. I used it in a post last fall (I think), but the only image I could locate was on Pinterest. One day I want to add a fireplace to our porch.

Kelly, Thank you for identifying the picture of the stacked stone fireplace, I’ll go back and add the name. I try to be diligent with credit but it is challenging with Pinterest and tumblr. We thought seriously about a fireplace in our atrium, but it would have taken too much space. I do think they are a wonderful addition to any outdoor room. Karen

Whenever I hear “courtyard” I think of the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice, where we took a welcome respite from Renaissance art. As soon as I entered, I decided I wanted a courtyard someday. That day hasn’t come (yet) … but maybe when we build our retirement home! I’d also love a covered space where we could sit and enjoy the Northwest rain. For now, we love our front porch and backyard deck. Outdoor rooms are so important. Your examples are inspirational, and I love your cool blues in your garden spot and atrium. Oh yeah–I’d like to have an atrium, too! 🙂

Good Morning, I will have to look up the Peggy Guggenheim museum for a pictorial tour, I’ve never been to Italy. I really love travel memories, like mini vacation in your mind. lol. I think I’ve mentioned that a good friend of ours lives on Bainbridge Island so I’m somewhat familiar with the beauty of your region. With it’s lush vegetation a protected courtyard would be fabulous. Thanks for stopping by. 😀 Karen

Debra, Oh, I wish I had been in the bay area…we could have met and grabbed a coffee! 😀 I now believe that when you’re a garden enthusiast you can find positives in each growing zone, except maybe the desert (and that’s just me, I’ve seen gardens in that harsh climate that are impressive). Overall, California does benefit by it’s mild climate, but I wouldn’t mind a little snow in winter. xo, Karen

Karen, I think your outdoor rooms are delightful! You’re so lucky. We’re hanging on to the side of Oak Mountain by the skin of our teeth, so we only have a deck. We did terrace our front lawn with a large brick retaining wall, but it still isn’t level enough for an outdoor room.
This is such an inspiring post. I hope you’ll get to enjoy your outdoor rooms soon. We’re getting rain today, so we’ll be indoors!
xo,
RJ

Ricki Jill, I’ve always said the outdoor rooms are a consolation prize for the lack of a view. “hanging on the side of Oak Mountain” sounds like it would take your breath away, view-wise. We’ve had a very weird spring, for our region the weather is usually spotted with very warm days and plenty of sunshine. We’re now into June gloom and it’s pretty cool, temperature wise. Summer will probably come in like a lion! Enjoy your weekend, hope the rain lets up in time for Saturday/Sunday. 😀 xo, Karen

Karen,
I’ve been waiting anxiously for this post and you outdid yourself! I loved all the pics but especially the ones from your house. I miss having an atrium but I’ve decided I could re-do our side deck to serve as a private sitting area. It’s more sheltered than the back deck and smaller in scale. With the proper potted plants and patio furniture, I might have a winner. If I get started, I’ll be able to enjoy it this summer.
Thanks (as always) for the inspiration, my friend.

Oh, I love that idea! I can see a couple of comfy chairs with a table between (just large enough to hold a beverage). That view is nice as well, with the trees and the cutting garden just off to the right a bit. Keep me posted. xo, Karen

Karen, since we’re currently working on our outdoor room I found your pictures very inspirational. If only I had the budget to do what I can envision! I think I’ll have to create the space I want in our next house when I can start with a blank canvas!

Great inspiration in this post, and your own outdoor vignettes are lovely!
We are slowly putting our patio back together. I’m crossing fingers that it will be done by 4th of July.

What beautiful outdoor spaces. I am with you, and I love our outside space as much as any room inside our home. Your sitting area with the pea gravel is so charming and looks like the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine to end the day. Just love it.
I so remember that porch from I Dream of Africa, when I first saw the picture I knew I had seen it before. I don’t know what I’d do with a space so lovely. I feel like spring can and went down here in Florida..its already hot and humid, but our backyard is better set up for those summer days than anything else.

We’re still experiencing more spring than summer temps here. I’m ready for some blue skies and sunshiny days to enjoy the great outdoors. 😀 Karen
