As I mentioned in my Valentine’s Dinner post, meatloaf, especially in the winter months, is a comfort food…for some, not for me. It is one of Mr. B’s favorite meals and it used to be a favorite of my father’s. I can remember mom making a huge meatloaf and then we would eat meatloaf sandwiches for a couple of days after she served the beast.

Years ago, when my mom fixed meatloaf for Mr. B (shortly after we were married) on our drive home he said, “why don’t you ever fix meatloaf?” To which I stated, “because I don’t really care for it”…yep, I can be selfish that way. After giving it some thought I decided maybe it was my mom’s meatloaf that I really didn’t like (bless you, mom) so I began trying meatloaf recipes from a wide array of sources.
I hit upon a recipe that I was certain couldn’t be rivaled in a 2001 Bon Appetit. The March issue featured a meatloaf called “Red-Onion Meat Loaf“. Since Mr. B loved red onion and I didn’t mind it I figured I’d give it a go. It’s a delicious recipe and I’ve given you the link so that you can easily print it and try it yourself.
Then, a few years ago we were watching Bobby Flay’s Throw Down, on Food TV. He threw down for a meatloaf cook-off with the Collucci brothers of Hyannis, Mass. They have been serving their meatloaf recipe for generations at the Collucci’s 4 Brothers Bistro & Last Resort. I seem to remember that Bobby lost the throw down, but it was his recipe that sounded best to Mr. B. and I. I’ve been making the recipe ever since…until Ian Garten’s new Foolproof cookbook had a recipe for 1770 House meatloaf. I had to try it. It’s delicious but Mr. B, and fortunately, I agree that Bobby Flay’s recipe still wins our cravings, hands down.
Click on the link for each recipe and give them a try if you and yours love meat loaf. I’ve included table settings to jazz things up a bit. Hey, if you’re going to eat you have to set the table, right?

Do you like meatloaf? If you have a wonderful recipe, I’d love to borrow it. I’m always searching for the next “best” meatloaf ever for my honey!

Hey!! It’s your anniversary? Sending you virtual champagne!!
Looking at the place settings, there is one with multiple silver candlesticks in the middle. I love this look, especially if they’re oversized… I have a few, and I was at Ikea the other day, and they had some. The chunky kind I like…
I didn’t buy them, since my policy with buying junk is: DON’T. (Unless you really can’t live without it and it’s only a dollar…) I talked myself out of them, because the last thing I need is some silver-coated plastic. But now I’m second-guessing myself.
Hope you’re doing something fun today!! Or this weekend…

Victoria, Thanks for the Champagne…it goes with this busy day I’m having at work…sort of smooths the edges. 🙂 I should adopt that philosophy on buying junk. Ikea sometimes has really good junk and I bought a boat load of lanterns from them last year, along with the battery operated string of lights…they look really cute in the backyard in the summer. But usually stuff like that goes in the trash or Goodwill box and I wonder, “what were you thinkin?!” Meanwhile, we went to see Wicked and to dinner for our anniversary, very fun. Can’t believe we’re that old! Karen

Karen,
After reading your post, I’m craving meatloaf! I don’t fix it often but I love it. Ina’s 1770 House meatloaf is a favorite but I want to try Bobby Flay’s.
Great table settings too!

Linda, I’d love you and Tom to try Bobby Flay’s recipe and then let me know what you think. The recipe sounds like it would taste different than it does…it’s really delicious. Karen

Happy Anniversary, Karen!!! Are you planning anything special? 40 years sounds like a nice visit to an Inn to me.
I’m not much of a meatloaf lover. When I told my daughter I don’t really like meatloaf, she was shocked. What can I say? It was a quick easy meal and everyone else liked it. I think memories of my mother making it with ketchup baked on top is something I just can’t erase haha. It was served with canned boiled potatoes and yummy canned peas. No wonder we didn’t have an obesity problem back then.
Love the place settings. I’m a huge fan of the pheasants and feathers.
Again…Happy Anniversary!!!!!
Best,
Kathy

Kathy, Oh my, I can hardly stop laughing. It’s as if your mom had the same cooking lessons my mom did. We always ate canned potatoes and canned vegetables. I guess it was the era, when I started taking cooking lessons and prepared asparagus for Mr. B. he asked me what it was. He had grown up with canned asparagus and thought he didn’t like it. Yes, it’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years…we can neither one believe we’re old enough to have been married that long. We had amazing seats for Wicked and our youngest son and his new bride joined us and then we had dinner. It was perfectly delightful. I also received a new camera, hopefully my photos for my blog, oh and of my granddaughter, will be better for it. xo, Karen

Stu’s been asking for comfort food lately so your meatloaf recipe is well timed. The table settings are wonderful too!
Happy Anniversary – you’ve joined the 40year plus group! Can it possibly be that long?

I can’t believe this post, I made my hubby meatloaf this week for the first time in years…what are the chances Its not a special recipe by any means (got it from an Newlywed cookbook I got for a shower gift). I so wished I had seen this sooner, I would have loved to dazzle him with a new recipe. I’m going to try the red onion version next time for sure!
Karen B. said:
Christina, I think you and hubby will like the red onion recipe, of all the recipes for meatloaf I’ve tried, that is my favorite. Coming from a tepid meatloaf fan, that high praise. 🙂 Have a great weekend. Karen

Hi Karen! Sorry that I’m so late getting here.. busy week and this new blog format with the video footage is very time consuming! At any rate.. this is such a fun post! First, happy anniversary! 40 years.. wow! We will celebrate 31 soon:)
Thank you for posting all of these wonderful meatloaf links and I appreciate your comments on all the recipes. I make it every now and then and I’m embarrassed to say I don’t follow a recipe 😉 and it’s kinda the old fashioned way. I usually add a little sausage to give it flavor. I’m anxious to try Bobby’s recipe. Pot roast, creamy mashed potatoes, and wine is on the menu for tonight:)
Have a wonderful weekend!

Leslie, No worries, I love your new blog site header and formatting. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Bobby’s recipe if you fix it.
Thank you for your sweet anniversary wishes! It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. 😀 Pot roast and creamy mashed potatoes, is that Pioneer Woman’s recipe? xo, Karen

Happy (belated) anniversary! 40 years is something to celebrate. You saw Wicked! love love love it! Your meatloaf will have to be tried out here. We ate at a restaurant in Atlanta last night that had the best tasting meatloaf EVER (according to my son). It was smothered in a brown gravy, so I am on the search for a good meatloaf recipe.
Karen B. said:
Thanks, Kelly. Have you seen Ina Garten’s 1770 House Meatloaf recipe, it has a gravy recipe that you are supposed to pour over the finished meatloaf. I’ve made it and it’s very good. I liked the gravy so much I added it to the Bobby Flay recipe. Pass along any worthwhile meatloaf recipe you find, please. 😀 xo, Karen

I have not seen that one, but I have heard of it. My son said not only was the gravy good, it had a very “blended” texture. My meatloaf has a good bit of bread in it, and it doesn’t all blend together. He said this one was like they had put it through a blender or food processor to get it all smooth. I will look for Ina’s. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi, Karen! We’ve been abroad, and just got home yesterday. So good to be home as I really missed home cooked comfort food: soups, meatloaf, lasagna, chicken pot pie, etc 🙂 I love traveling, but eating out can be expensive and challenging in foreign countries. People eat so late in France, while we love eating early. Oh, well…..having pasta tonight 🙂

Loi, So happy you’re home safe and sound. I’ll look forward to some photographs and details of your trip to France (and other points of interest). Bottom line, there’s no place like home, right?! Pasta is the ultimate comfort food to me—I hope you aren’t too jet lagged. We’ve missed your always entertaining posts. 😀 xo, Karen
