2016 is well underway (What? It’s April?!) and I was determined to make a few changes in the house.
#1. I changed out a chair that had been in our family room, with a chair that lived in our reading room. [It’s the little things] The energy to clean, organize, and maybe mix things up a bit around the house hits occasionally and I have to take advantage of it. That’s the fun of making changes with items you own, no harm, no foul if it doesn’t work out. 🙂
BEFORE READING ROOM: This is the chair and ottoman that was switched to the family room. {The reading room gets its own little pre-lit tree each Christmas}
BEFORE FAMILY ROOM: This chair is oversized and while it looks comfortable, the upholsterer overdid it with the wrap on the back cushion and it feels like you’re being pushed out of the chair when you sit on it. I plan to have this corrected with our upholsterer.
AFTER FAMILY ROOM: The toile chair and ottoman provide a little more space in the room and I was able to move one of my ceramic garden stools indoors and use it next to the chair.
AFTER READING ROOM: I sit in this room to read during the winter. The room’s south facing window provides me with plenty of light and warmth when the weather cools.
#2. In February I reupholstered the red check sofa in the family room. I’ll be shopping for some pillows and hope to eventually have a variety of cushion covers that I can change out for the seasons.
BEFORE RED CHECK SOFA: I took the pictures for this post when I first changed out the chairs.
AFTER: I purchased the khaki colored fabric from Dorell Fabrics for the sofa. {If you live in Orange County, it’s a great source for upholstery fabric} While I shop for new pillow fabric, maybe something more spring/summer like, I was able to switch the reading room black and white pillows with the red pillows. The red pillows are now in the reading room. Isn’t it great when you can make changes without spending any money?!
#3. The final change for this particular post is my header on the site. Kevin, younger son, changed it for me. {Thank you Kevin!}
Future changes in store are mostly aimed at the yard. This year I plan to start small. The first planting area I’ve tackled is the flower bed that surrounds the patio. Stay tuned, I’ll share other updates as they happen.
Have you been busy around the house this year? I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to. ♥ Karen

Hi Karen,
I enjoy seeing your home. Your changes are lovely. I really like the placement of the toile chair next to the fireplace now. I did like the red check in the sofa but the neutral is wonderful and gives you more decorating flexibility so when the mood strikes again to redecorate! Yes, Dorell is a wonderful resource. I’ve driven by it a million times but have only been inside once. I bought some great fabric for a living room entry table table skirt. I was hoping to make a trip this weekend for some fabric needed for my new desk chair for the One Room Challenge. Would you recommend your upholsterer?

Hi Vanessa,
Yes, my reupholsterer is wonderful and my designer friend uses her and she agrees. She’s not over the top expensive and perfection is her middle name. Here is her contact info. I don’t know where you live but she’s located in Laguna Niguel. Home Creations Design, Inc. 949-597-9065, her name is Audi.
Thanks for the compliment! Karen

I love the changes. The khaki sofa looks great, especially with the nail head trim and the blue cushions look perfect with it. What a pretty and inviting chair and ottoman – I fear I would spend too much time there if that were mine! xx Sharon

Leslie, Thanks, sometimes when I move things around I’ll think, why didn’t I try that before?! The other chair never had a table to set a drink on due to the large footprint of space it needed.
I heard the Seattle area had 3 straight days of 80+ degree temps, very unusual of April! Happy planting. xo, Karen

The changes look great! The sofa turned out so well. Your print above the sofa really looks good with the new fabric, especially with the black & white pillows. The toile chair looks like it was meant for its new spot, too. Love those kind of changes that bring such high payoffs.
I thought of you recently– had to replace one of the rose bushes, and OSH had a collection inspired by Downton Abbey. I got Anna’s Promise, a beautiful coral. Hope you approve. 🙂

Hi Vicki, Thank you, it’s nice to receive approval from blog friends, it means alot. What a fun rose to buy. I wish I’d seen OSH’s Downton Abbey roses. I hope it does well. I do love roses in the garden, not only for their show of color, but to be able to cut a few and bring them in makes me so happy. xo, Karen

Love your changes, Karen! Especially the sofa – so clean and tailored. And the new blog banner looks great. Kevin needs to do mine 🙂
Happy spring,

Hi Loi, Thank you! Neutral feels good and I’ve gravitated to it for some time, starting with the first time I saw your home in D.C. Kevin is my unofficial IT guy. Fortunately he makes short work of tasks connected to the computer that would take me hours to accomplish. 🙂 xo, Karen

Hi Karen,
Love the changes you’ve made. The toile chair and ottoman looks great in it’s new location and I love the new sofa! Can’t wait to see what you find for pillow fabric. I love moving things around too. Something about the change of seasons, always seems to give me motivation to spruce things up. Thanks for inspiring me once again!

Karen, I thought you had changed your header but since I could no longer see the old one, I wasn’t sure. I like it–you have such a nice house, it’s good to show it off. The loveseat looks all shaped up in its new khaki coat and snappy nailheads. I wish I could swap some furniture or rearrange, but our layout is somewhat limited. I might try changing something when I finish painting the living room. –D’Arcy
