As I mentioned earlier, I recently had our very tired, very sad red and white buffalo check sofa reupholstered. I’ve been using a more neutral palate wherever possible. I have read it will calm me, so far, not so much. 🙂 You can take the Type A personality out of the chaos, but you can’t take the chaos out of the Type A.
We decided to add oil rubbed bronze nail heads to the arms this time (in the picture they look brass, but in person they are definitely oil rubbed bronze in color). I like the extra detailing on the sofa and began to notice how many pieces of furniture in my ‘saved’ furniture file have nailheads. {Sorry about the dog dishes in the kitchen, missed that in my viewfinder while taking this picture}
The New Jersey Star Ledger explained that this is an enduring element of furniture design…
The decorative use of nailheads on furniture is believed to have begun in 17th century France with the ornately carved wooden seating of the Louis XIII period. During this time when the most luxurious furnishings were coveted, craftsmen would use decorative nails to secure fine upholstery such as velvet, brocade, tapestries or leather.
I want to share some of my recent, and not so recent, furniture with nailheads finds…
I love the nailheads on these chairs, as well as the ikat fabric.
Aren’t these beds wonderful? Perfect for a room for adolescent teens or visiting guests. {also, isn’t this wallpaper great?}
This pretty chair is covered in Sebastian Tattersall in Sky, a part of the new SMW Home textile collection.
What are your thoughts? Do you like nailheads or could you skip them?

Our battered, family heirloom leather chair/footstool needed to be retied and recovered and even though we used a heavy tweed fabric, the upholsterer retained the “club” look with nailheads. The classic style still has panache.

I agree, Libby! I recently saw an image of a dining room ceiling that sported a geometric pattern achieved with nail heads. It was very pretty.

I like them, Karen!
They can add an understated yet desirable decorative touch.
And, I like your posts! Have just begun to peruse your page and hope to see more.
Greetings from Pennsylvania!

Hi Dottie, Thank you so much for joining in the conversation. I have a dear friend getting ready to leave on vacation to explore some of the highlights of your great state. I agree, there is something about nail heads on furniture that lends a certain vintage look without shouting. 🙂 Karen

Just like a little dog (or cat) hair on an outfit completes it, so do dog dishes in a kitchen. I would not be without either.

Rebecca, So true…did you notice the dog dishes in our kitchen in the photograph of the newly upholstered sofa? lol Karen

I’m a big fan of nail heads, they fit my Spanish style home perfectly. Your examples are lovely and it was fun to learn a bit about the history of their use. I too used them recently when I reupholstered some furniture for my son’s first apartment. I found they also make the upholstery process easier.
Karen B. said:
Celia, So true. I think they have always appeared on furniture in the “club/lodge” like rooms that I tend to admire, so they fit nicely in any masculine environment. I really liked the touches you used in your son’s apartment—bet he’s happy to have a creative mom! Karen

i love nailhead details. They are such a nice finishing touch. and can make a huge impact on the design of a piece. Its amazing exactly how many types of nailheads there are (style size and color). Plus, the spacing of the nailheads can be a whole other topic of conversation. You’ve included a nice selection of pictures…nice post!
Even the chair I am sitting in now (my previous office desk chair that is now in the family room), has nailheads. It was custom ordered and I had to have nailheads (antiqued silver) added to it. I am thinking of having it reupholstered and refinished but the nailheads will have to stay! Love ’em!

When I selected nail heads for the re upholstery work on the sofa, I was surprised at the available finishes and sizes and shapes they showed. I sure your upholsterer can remove the custom nail heads and reuse them in the chair. That gives the chair even more of a story. 🙂 Karen

Karen,
I love nail heads and always have. Your “new” sofa looks fantastic and I’m sure you’ll get many years of enjoyment out of it. One of my favorite posts of yours was when you highlighted Randy Boyd’s (of Thurston/Boyd Design) home in Laguna Beach. The dining room chairs upholstered in brown toile with nail head trim were my absolute favorite! I’m inspired once again by your post to add some nail head pieces to my own furnishings.
Karen B. said:
Linda, Randy Boyd’s is my dream house and those chairs have always been favorites of mine too. I’m certain Mr. B. would put the kibosh on the idea. 🙂 xo, Karen

I adore nail heads as they add that tailored finishing touch to most upholstery. Oh, and your first photo would simply not be complete without the finishing touch of your pet bowls. Now go grab some “calm” time on your sofa!

CD, This is why I’m sure I’ll never be a good photographer…I never even noticed them until I reviewed my post this morning, after it was published! lol I need to, at the very least, buy the dogs some of those pretty blue and white porcelain dog bowls. 🙂 xo, Karen

Your sofa looks great- love it with those pillows! Nailheads just seem to take furniture up a notch. I’m especially smitten with all those dining chairs you showed. I hadn’t realized until now what a great way it is to spread a metal finish around a room or house.
Karen B. said:
Vicki, Thank you. After I had already finished this post I saw a room with a geometric nail head finish in the ceiling of a dining room. It sounds like it might be too much, but it was really pretty. The metal finishes and colors these nail heads come in is challenging to choose from. Karen

Hello dearest Karen!!!!
OK, my father was a professional upholsterer and I’d watch him hammer these decorative pieces to fine furniture. I LOVE THEM! I would use them on a velvet couch or chair, or one of linen. Your sofa looks beautiful! And, thank you kindly for coming to visit me and for reading the article. I simply cannot find a copy for myself! No one in the Twin Cities carries this magazine and even an on-line purchase failed since Amazon doesn’t carry it either! Oh of all the magazines I can’t find, one with my studio on the cover!

Thank you Anita. It’s always fun to hear from you. Wow, wouldn’t I love to have an upholsterer in the family. My grandfather, RIP, was an upholsterer. xo, Karen

Karen, I have always been a fan of nailheads. I have used them many times on past furniture. Right now I have a headboard that has the larger antique bronze type. I love the level of detail it adds.
I agree that those wonderful beds are my favorite image. I would like to know whose wallpaper that is too!
Karen B. said:
I love that headboard you have and it’s so impressive that you attached the nail heads yourself! xo, Karen

Karen, no nailheads in my house … but they look perfect on your couch. Never apologize for dog bowls! All the best houses have them. (And besides, I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it–I was too busy looking at how nice your couch looks with your other accessories.) –D’Arcy

D’Arcy, I appreciate your comment—the dog bowls were brought to my attention and I was surprised anyone noticed, I certainly didn’t. 🙂 xo, Karen

Your couch is beautiful Karen! You did a great job and I like the brass color. Isn’t it amazing what a fabric change does to a room?! Nail heads are a traditional classic move 😉 and a bit masculine ..which I love! Happy Thursday:)

what a great job on your couch Karen, it’s such a classic looking piece now. But you made me laugh at the Type A comment. Let me know when you find the magic color that makes me calm ok? 🙂 on the topic of nails I never realized how much I like them until I was browsing the beautiful photos you shared. I had nailheads on a pair of Lillian August chairs and because of the fabric, they seemed too ‘heavy’ looking for my new place. But seeing the nailheads with the lighter fabrics reminded me that they add that extra touch. I love your taste and always appreciate the time you take to find such wonderful photos to share. Also — thank you so much for the comment you left on my post. I’m glad you could relate and that you’re listening to your self more now. I think we do that as we get older and that’s such a good thing. I hope you have a relaxing weekend.
