When writing for Garden, Home and Party, it can feel more like writing a personal journal than sharing glimpses of your interests with the internet. I think this is because the conversation is often short and comments can be few in number. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a complaint, especially since I read a lot more blog posts than I leave comments for. Time is always the issue and I try to remember that when I don’t hear from folks on my end.
Along the way, you reveal your personal preferences [in my case] for items in the garden, decorative items found in a home and ideas/inspiration for entertaining. So it is no surprise that I may have mentioned my love of blue and white as a color scheme for homes, and even gardens HERE, HERE AND HERE.
Then, just when you think maybe you’ve written all there is to write on the topic of gardens, home decór and parties, someone surprises you with an act of kindness. This creates excitement to write another post, if for no other reason than to share that excitement with your “blog friends” and thank the thoughtful friend that bestowed the random act of kindness on you.
That happened recently when a friend, who reads my blog, contacted me to say she had been shopping in an antique store and had picked up something she thought I might like. Surprise and delight, touched by the thoughtfulness of people, all flooded my mind and I could hardly wait to see what it was. The package arrived and to my excitement and joy, it was this pair of vintage/antique blue cut glass salt and pepper shakers. Aren’t they charming and wonderful? {Thank you so much, Marilee}.
So, as I know many of you love enjoy blue and white inspiration/beauty as much as me, here we go again, down that path of this classic color combination. Hopefully there are few new images that you’ve not seen before. 🙂
I’ve always loved dark blue paint on walls and built-ins, so striking especially when paired with brass.
I’ve color coordinated my bookshelves but this, while challenging to find only blue books, is a pretty decorating statement.

A lovely shade of almost turquoise blue.
Such fresh blue and white prints for a bedroom.
Barbara Westbrook recently shared a feature in her Westbrook Workbook on vignettes, but the blue paint captured my attention as well.

This is a favorite color combination—blue and white with a few red accents.

Do you love the combination of blue and white. I really love it, just as I love khaki and black, with a little red thrown in for good measure.

And just when I am planning on taking down the blue and white plaid drapes in our master bedroom and replace them with something more neutral you go and show all this gorgeous blue and white…and especially that last photo with the blue plaid chairs that I love! Darn it. Change for 6 window treatments comes slow.
How sweet of Marilee to think of you with the blue salt and pepper shakers! The connections that the blog world brings about is amazing!

Kelly, I do love your blue and white accents, but this time of year does pull on my neutral leanings…especially with a few red accents. You and I share that love of *red* with khaki. 🙂 xo, Karen

I LOVE the shakers! So charming!
Blue and white is such a timeless combination that can be casual or elegant. I’m going to redo my poolhouse in blue and white, just as soon as I get one…

I’ve always thought you seemed like the pool house type of gal…when the pool freezes over in the winter months you could ice skate in your blue velvet skating dress trimmed in white fur, faux fur, of course. 🙂 xo, Karen

So cheery, Karen! Although I don’t decorate with blue and white, I am always drawn to the clean, fresh look of these colors. Homes decorated in blue and white seem to stay in my memory a very long time. Blue and white dishes are just lovely! Hugs to Marilee for her sweet kindness! The blogging community is truly a special one! ♡

Dawn, the funny thing about my passion for blue and white is that I don’t decorate in blue and white exclusively. I have a guest room and some blue and white porcelain in our family room, but our home is mostly fairly neutral. Like you, I sure admire the color combination when done well. Happy Wednesday! Karen

Hi Karen, Oh, those blue & white chairs are too pretty. Love those sort of moody blue colors you showed as well. That was sweet of Marilee to add to your collection.
I hope you’ll do a post on khaki and black too- that’s another great combo. Have a lovely week!
Karen B. said:
Vicki, I really do gravitate more towards black and khaki, but I like a blue and white room when I see one! Fickle, aren’t I? You have a great week as well! Looks like we’ll be feeling a last (hopefully) last gasp of summer this weekend! xo, Karen

Karen, is there anything fresher or more classic than blue and white? With the prospect of a new house I can’t wait to try out new ways to incorporate blue and white into the design. You’ve given me so many beautiful examples in this (and past) blogs that I’ll have lots to inspire me!
I love the blue glass salt and pepper shakers too!

Hi Gretchen, I’m just a little bit jealous of your opportunity to start fresh in a home, adding the layers that create an inviting mood. I’ll enjoy observing along the way! xo, Karen

Karen, ..love the shakers and how thoughtful of a reader to send them to you! I never tire of blue and white so keep the inspiration coming;) I recently painted one of my powder rooms a dark navy. It’s a nice contrast to all the light (gray) walls throughout the house. The brass and bronze looks pretty with the blues ~ gorgeous look. Enjoy your day! xxL
Karen B. said:
Leslie, I have always loved a room painted navy and a powder room seems the ideal candidate. I hope you’ll share that with your readers sometime. Happy Wednesday, we’re headed for another summer-like weekend, ugh. But the evenings are cooling and I’m convinced we’ll get some fall weather sometime in November! 🙂 xo, Karen

Hello Karen,
Although I do love the look of blue and white, I grew up with too much of it in England (a very popular color combo out there and especially in my childhood kitchen – lots of Blue Willow and the like), I do not have a single item of blue in my house. Thinking over the issue, I’m not sure if that was a conscious choice or not …. hmmm… you’ve given me food for thought.
How lovely that the Blogosphere connects us all and that at times it can be most rewarding, especially when a thoughtful reader decides to send a little goodie ones way. I hope you enjoy your salt and pepper shakers for many years to come.
Karen B. said:
CD, I do equate certain blue and white rooms with an English country home look. Like the last image, Vickers in Kent, posted by Scot of tartanscot. It’s a look I’m always drawn to. That said, I don’t have a blue and white house. I do have a small collection of blue and white porcelain items in our family room. For years, hunter green and the floral fabrics of the 80’s won my *home decor heart*. I do find myself sticking with a fairly neutral palate as I’ve gotten older and the accent pieces and colors step to the forefront. Isn’t it interesting to see how our style evolve over the years? Thank you adding to the conversation, I always enjoy our visits. xo, Karen

What a wonderful surprise and love the cobalt salt and pepper shakers. I never tire of beautiful blue and white. I am obsessed with the blue grasscloth wallpaper in the bedroom…stunning!!
Karen B. said:
Thanks! I would love a navy or cobalt blue room and that example of grasscloth is especially appealing. There’s a softer look to the bold color. Enjoy the upcoming weekend! I hope you are dry and safe in your region. My heart goes out to those that suffered that last dreadful storm. xo, Karen

Sherry,
What a sweet story! Blue has always been a favorite color combination for me too, I just started on a different part of the color wheel when the Mister and I were married. It’s time for a change, blue and white accents are showing up in our mostly neutral toned home. 🙂
Thank you for stopping by.
