Ralph Lauren, tailored

I am often drawn to what some would call masculine lines of design, cars are one example.  As a teenager I was into cars, I assume it was my generation and growing up in Southern California.  My high school parking lot was filled with cars such as the ’57 Chevy and Pontiac GTO.  Nothing as cool as the cars above!

Ralph Lauren Brookfield collection

In fashion the “preppy” trend captured my comfort zone and I’ve dressed in fairly tailored clothing ever since.  (Am I beginning to sound dull or overly masculine?)  I am definitely girly in lots of ways, but where design is concerned I truly love fairly tailored lines.  This hasn’t always been the case.  There was a time in the 80’s when cabbage rose chintz and even pink walls were the look, but after raising 2 sons and living with a guy’s guy husband, I’ve made the transition.

Pamela Pierce

After I was married I noticed that I leaned towards a more “gentleman’s club” style decor.  I like English country style and even though that style (at one time) included flowery chintz fabrics, it was the warm oak paneling and barley twist legs of a table that captured my attention.  On my first trip to England we frequented pubs and cafes that were the very epitome of what I would call a masculine-looking design style.

A few years back I purchased an antique pair of antlers that, for me, add to the warm, English decor that I love.  I’ve noticed an increased use of antlers in beautifully designed rooms, and while I know and understand the reason some people find it disgusting to display dead animal parts of any kind (for the record, I couldn’t hunt a furry creature if my survival depended on it), I must say I think it’s a nice accent!

Ralph Lauren seems to capture the ideal “masculine” look with his rooms and lifestyle accessories.  Maybe it’s a look that some would identify as an upper crust, blue-blood, tailored, thoroughbred, East coast vibe.  In any event, I’m in Southern California and I’m on board with the look.

Engagement Party

My apologies for the photo formatting.  I’m still trying to figure out why/how to place a group of pictures together without WordPress re-formatting the groupings AFTER it posts as it has below.  Arrrg!

Hubby and I, as parents of the groom-to-be, are planning an engagement party for our newly engaged son #2 and his lovely fiancé.

via

I thought since I’m thinking of little else, I’d share with you the steps I generally follow when planning a party larger than 10, which is the largest number of dinner guests my dining room table can comfortably seat, so usually we invite a few couples over and keep dinner simple.  This will be a little more involved if for no other reason than we expect a few less than 50 guests for hors d’oeuvres and libations in celebration of the engagement.

First we had to decide on a date.  I knew I wanted to host it while daylight savings time is still in place (giving us a bit more daylight into the evening) and didn’t want to interfere with Halloween weekend.  The date we selected is October 22nd and that gave me a little more than 1 month to get things done.  Phew! We also had to consider the availability of our groom and bride to be.

I’ve been to an engagement party for a dear friend’s son recently and decided to follow her lead with a cocktails  and (heavy) hors d’oeuvres menu. This made the details of the food more manageable for me.  I’ll be able to supplement the homemade appetizers with a few store bought favorites (thank you Costco and Trader Joes).  I will make sure most of the appetizers are mostly one-bite size and will use only cocktail napkins.  Reminder to self, have a few discreet trash cans available tucked in corners out of mainstream sight, to facilitate guests discarded napkins, picks and plastic glasses.

via Party Resources

After we had decided on a date I began our guest list.  We need to keep it to no more than 50 guests.  Our cottage has managed that number before and although it’s cozy with people, I think it could easily border on cramped once we go over that number.  I had to ask the happy couple for their list and then I began shopping invitations.  I wanted to try ordering invitations from one of the online sources (I’ve seen so many great looking invitations from a wide variety of online companies) and we all agreed on a style I found on Tiny Prints.  We’ve ordered the invitations and they will be here with about a week to address them  (in order to give folks a 3 week advance notice of the date of the party).

via Tiny Prints

I’ve lined up 2 servers, one young lady I work with and another that has served at events for another organization I belong to.  This is a bit of a luxury, but when it’s a cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, having help with final food prep and tray-passing is so nice.  It allows the hostess to enjoy the party!

The menu I’ve chosen will be fairly simple but will include several hors d’oeuvres that are substantive with chicken and beef, a variety of cheese based bites and some snacks that are tasty and easy to eat.  I want my guests to feel like they’ve had plenty to eat.

These little bundles of joy are asparagus, arugula, baby greens salt and pepper wrapped with prosciutto.  I will toss the greens (lightly) in a vinaigrette before the wrap.  It’s a little salad wrap.

The meat ball recipe I use includes Jimmy Dean sausage links with a sweet sauce that envelopes each bite; brown the sausage and allow to simmer in a blackberry brandy, chili sauce, soy sauce and molasses.  {Email me if you’d like this recipe}.

The little salami bites are a recipe I found when visiting my friend on Bainbridge Island.  Fill each salami round with a spread of boursin herbed cheese and add a row of capers, roll and secure with a pick…super easy and very tasty.

I plan to use pumpkins and fall flowers on the dessert table, bar table and the kitchen island.  This time of year makes flowers and other table enhancements easy for me, it is certainly of the my favorite seasons.   We plan to have our Kooboo chairs out on the grass and we’ll push the patio table to one side to give the patio more room for guests that want to stand and visit.

I’ll try to  remember to take some pictures after we’ve set up for the event for a future post.

I’ll have the patio table pushed to one side with a cloth and flowers and pumpkins.  The Kooboo chairs will be situated in the backyard in groupings, to encourage guests to mix and mingle.

We’ll have our French doors wide open to encourage movement with the guests.  You know how some parties bottle neck in one spot and you can’t get folks to move around?  I’m hoping to avoid that by setting the bar up in the atrium and having the USC game on in the family room and then with seating and standing space in the back yard we’ll hope for plenty of milling around, visiting and general good cheer.

I’ll move this furniture to the backyard as well and we’ll set the bar up here…folks can grab a beverage on their way in (the atrium is one the left side mid-way in the entry.

This is so exciting!  I’d love to hear any last minute tips from you!

Under Spanish Moss blog

By now, hopefully you’ve invited fall into your home and heart!  You’ve gotten into the spirit of the season and maybe grudgingly admitted that the fresh, crisp air invigorates you.

via Ralph Lauren

Maybe you’ve started a good book and have plans for many cozy weekends relaxing in front of the fire with said book.

Under Spanish Moss blogvia Under Spanish Moss

Maybe you’ve decided to spend your fall season in Europe…me too! {I wish}.

Maybe a trip to Napa Valley, California is in the cards.  What a beautiful time of the year to head up there.  If you go, email me and I’ll send you some information on some of my favorite wineries and shopping.

Maybe you’re taking long walks down a country lane…boy, do I ever wish our “lane” looked like this!

Whatever fall has in store for you, I wish you all of the seasons best and I hope you are enjoying this time, a favorite of mine!

Autumn

For those of you dear friends and family who adore summer, I apologize (for your season as about to pass), but I get downright giddy this time of year.  I’m always energized by fall’s arrival.

Fall, barnvia The Steward

There are 10 more days of summer, clearly more than that of warm weather, but we can plan, can’t we?  I love everything about this time of year.  Back to school (when I was a student and when my kids were in school), cooler nights (for better sleep), a fire in the fireplace on especially cool evenings, scented candles, [Red Current (Votivo), Pomegranate Noir (Jo Malone), Fig, by almost anyone who makes a candle in this scent], hearty stew with crusty bread, mac and cheese (see a new recipe below), cashmere sweaters, blazers, boots, plaid, warm throw blankets on chairs and sofas, pumpkins…I could go on.

So my nod to the season…images that may inspire you.

for the love of a house, fall in New Hampshire

Mac ‘n’ Cheese

Total time: 50 minutes
Servings: 8 to 10

Macaroni base
1 (1-pound) box Cellentani (corkscrew) pasta
1/4 cup minced shallot (2 large shallots)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 quart heavy cream
8 ounces Boursin Garlic and Fine Herb Gournay cheese, crumbled

1. In a large pot of salted, boiling water, cook the pasta to al dente according to the package instructions, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
2. Heat a medium, heavy-bottom pot over medium-high heat until hot. Saute the shallots in the olive oil until lightly colored, then add the heavy cream. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and reduce by half, 8 to 10 minutes.
3. Whisk in the crumbled cheese until melted and incorporated, then stir in the pasta.
4. Remove from heat and reserve the base, still in the pan, in a warm place.

Chicken
4 (6-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper
2 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
2 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

Drizzle the chicken breasts with the olive oil, and season each side of each breast with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley and rosemary. Grill the chicken over moderate heat until the flesh is firm and the juices run clear, and a thermometer inserted reads 165 degrees. Remove from heat, cover and keep warm until needed.

Mac ‘n’ cheese assembly
1/2 cup diced pancetta
2 tablespoons oil
1/4 cup bread crumbs
Prepared macaroni base
Prepared chicken
4 teaspoons chopped parsley
4 teaspoons white truffle oil

1. In a medium saute pan, cook the pancetta in the oil over medium-high heat until crisp, 5 to 7 minutes
2. Strain the pancetta, leaving any fat in the pan.
3. Heat the pan with the fat over medium-high heat and sprinkle over the bread crumbs.
4. Saute the bread crumbs until darkened and toasted, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and drain the bread crumbs on a paper towel.
5. Heat the macaroni base over medium heat until hot, stirring frequently. While the base is heating, slice the chicken into strips.
6. Stir the chicken into the base, then stir in the crisp pancetta, parsley and white truffle oil, tossing to coat.
7. Divide the mac ‘n’ cheese among 4 serving bowls and top with the crisp bread crumbs. Serve immediately.

{Home} Cozy and other adjectives that describe home

cozy decorating

I am guilty of using some of the same adjectives to describe people, places and things (home decor) that I like or feel strongly about…such as the word “love”  (I defiantly use this word too much, wait isn’t love a verb?), warm, inviting, calming, comfortable and on and on.   One of the words that I use to describe rooms or vignettes that I like is “cozy”.

Design Chic

I search for cozy and inviting all the time.  They describe best what attracts me to a room or a corner of a room.

House Beautiful

Great meals can fall into the whole cozy definition for me…a fall or winter stew or soup with warm crusty bread can garner the feeling of cozy.  Maybe that is why I like the fall and winter seasons.

 Melanie Molesworth

What does ‘cozy’ mean to me?  I think for me it means the room has a lived-in comfort, furnishings that are overstuffed, less than perfect, warm colors, accessories that display a life of the person that lives there, a history, a warm color palate, someplace you would like to sit yourself down and enjoy a welcoming cup of tea or a glass of wine and good company.

Accessories make the room for me and antique treasures, above all, invite me in, provide the interest that makes me want to sit and stay awhile…

But above all, certain rooms or vignettes immediately make me feel like they are inviting, cozy.

The Lettered Cottage

Books and sliding barn doors say cozy to me…

Content in a Cottage

I still like spring and summer descriptions…cool, fresh, breezy, carefree, comfortable (although this word works with cozy too).

Even gardens can create a feeling of comfort and cozy for me.  English cottage gardens do a great job of conjuring the feeling in me.

What do you think of as your favorite adjective to describe a home, inside and out?  What speaks to you about homes you love?

Gearing up for Thanksgiving

Table Settings, Thanksgiving

Ahhh, Norman Rockwell...he set the bar pretty high!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the fact that it’s all about the food, oh, and the giving thanks part.  I’m pretty thankful almost daily for a whole host of things so I guess that part fell behind the good food part!  Sorry.  No gift buying, no costumes, just great food and football (and gratitude).

Mention Thanksgiving and I’m sure a good third of the population cringe at the idea of getting the family together.  After all, not every family is a cohesive Norman Rockwell family!  As an only child I dreamt of what it would be like to have siblings.  When I married my hubby I realized that since he too was an only child we’d be a small family.  This Thanksgiving was doomed to be even smaller since Son#1 and his lovely wife are living in Austin, Texas and Grand baby #1 is due the day before Thanksgiving.

I guess if you don't like turkey this image doesn't make your mouth water!

{Image courtesy of Martha Stewart}

So, Son #2, hubby and I were thrilled to be invited to our good friends home.  Cayley and I have shared a passion for entertaining and cooking for years.

Isn't this simple but pretty? Centerpieces are so much fun.

{Our families history goes back to our oldest son and their oldest son being in grade school together and ultimately the same fraternity at the same college}  Cayley and I will collaborate on menu and cooking duties.  I’ll post the menu once it’s in place.

Not a flower in site but still lovely.

Oh, and the best part?  Cayley and her hubby have 4 lovely adult children—gratitude will be abundant this Thanksgiving.

Martha Stewart gives directions on how to create these.

More Thanksgiving details to come…enjoy November!

Just in time for Halloween or any other reason to celebrate the season.

decorating for fall, Halloween

Just in case you haven’t decorated for fall yet—hey, I get it.  We’re all busy and maybe you don’t even like this season very much…no, that can’t be it.  Who doesn’t like Thanksgiving?  One of the best holidays because there isn’t any gift buying involved and lots of good food, what’s not to like?

Come on in, doesn't this entry say "welcome"?

In any case…here are a few more fall pictures to fire up your imagination and help you with ideas for putting a few fall decorations out, natural or not.

If you feel a little chill just cover up with the throw, I'll get you a cup of tea.

Not a pumpkin in site and yet this arrangement gives you a sense of fall bounty.

Too much, have we gone too far? This image can be seen live at the Dallas Arboretum Botanical Garden.

And for my friends that really don’t care for the color orange {you know who you are}…

La Dolfina had this lovely image on her site recently---for those who prefer something other than orange this fall.

Come back and see me! Happy fall, enjoy your Halloween.

decorating for fall, fall, recipe for pumpkin bread

Since FALL is one of my favorite seasons (I love SPRING equally; I feel a bit guilty that I don’t love SUMMER and only like WINTER!)  I thought I’d post these images that I stumbled upon while visiting various blog sites that I love.

Alright all of you traditionalists, have you ever bought one of these beautiful blue-gray pumpkins? They really are beautiful. Image via Country Living

There is something wonderful about fall's natural bounty on an antique table that just feels like home. Image via Country Living

Doesn't this image conjure up a hike on a brisk, fall day? We Southern California folks might have to endure a Santa Ana condition (warm winds) but a girl can dream, right? Image via Country Living

If YOU love FALL you may be inspired to put out some pumpkins, bake a pumpkin bread (recipe below) or curl up with a good book…OR, if you’re like most in my family, watch football!

Fight on!

Note regarding this recipe:  My friend Alison has a wonderful blog site called paper{whites} and she posted about this pumpkin bread which came from a site Tulips & Flight Suits—I knew the recipe had to be good when “Tulips” says that she believes this recipe is 40% of the reason her husband married her! 🙂

Pumpkin Bread

Bread (found on Tulip & Flight Suits via paper{whites} )

——————————————————————————–

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/4 cup pumpkin pie puree (Libby’s)
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

INSTRUCTIONS:

Heat oven to 350° F. Oil a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin pie filling, oil, sugar, syrup, and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Slowly stir the flour mixture into the pumpkin mixture.

Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 60 to 65 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack for 10 minutes. Using a knife, loosen the bread from the pan. Serve warm. Can also be frozen

fall, seasonal decorating

I have always been more of a fall/winter person than a spring/summer enthusiast.  I’m certain there is as much debate (trivial as it may be) about this topic as there is about being a morning person {raising hand} vs. a nighttime person!

Pumpkins at the entry announce the season. Image via Victoria

Don’t get me wrong, I love spring.  What’s not to love, right?  But I gain a burst of energy at the very thought of fall’s approach.

Persimmons and bittersweet make fall tablescapes a no brainer. Image via Country Living

So it was with much excitement that a fellow blogger, Melissa Michaels at The Inspired Room announced she was hosting her annual Fall Nesting Party.

I love the unexpected use of pumpkins in are non-conforming colors! Image via Victoria

Ornamental cabbage and orange flowers are beautiful in contrast and the centerpiece is low enough for great conversation during the meal. Image via Country Living

Melissa is also a fan of fall so she hosts this annual event where you can link to her site with your fall ideas for decorating.  The event isn’t until September 8th but I’ve started thinking of what I want to do, things I’ll layer on.

This is such a simple but elegant way to give a nod to the season without using orange, a color a friend of mine can't abide. Image via Victoria

For my sun-loving friends, trust me, I won’t pull out the plaid and pumpkins just yet but I’ll be thinking of them in eager anticipation!
