As a homeowner, I have always kept a ‘to do’ list of projects that require attention. About the time you feel like you’ve got everything in order, something will pop up that needs to be repaired or replaced.  I know you know this if you’re a homeowner.

Garden, Home and Party: Wood floor refinishing

On that list, for the past few years, refinishing our wood floors has been right at the top.  The wood floors are in every room of the house except the bedrooms. Fortunately, our house is small.

A week before Thanksgiving we noticed that the floors in the kitchen, going out to the side yard, were buckling slightly.  Long story short, we discovered our ice maker had developed a pin hole in the line running to the ice maker. Who knows how long it had been spewing this tiny spray of water?!

With “the holidays” around the corner we got our bids and told Cooper Floors we’d be ready to start the renovation by mid-January.  I’m thrilled with the result, and thanks to our sweet friend’s, Gretchen and Stu, we were able to stay with them the 4 days during the work of sanding, staining and sealing, making the experience pretty painless {thank you, Gretchen and Stu}.

The kitchen floors had to be replaced but our floor guy made sure it was interwoven with the existing floors so the new wood, compared to the old wood, isn’t noticeable.  All of the floors were sanded down to bare wood and stained and sealed in the end, giving us essentially new floors everywhere.

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared pictures of our house so I thought I’d share the kitchen, where just a couple of months ago, there was chaos and construction, at least where the floors are concerned.

{I hope to get pictures of each room to share with you this year.  It requires some planning to dress each room for a photo op.  This may take more time than one might imagine}

As you can see, our kitchen is fairly compact but it works well for us.  We remodeled it 10 years ago…I still can’t believe it’s been that long.

Garden, Home and Party: wood floors 2014

Essentially a galley kitchen, it’s easy to maneuver when cooking.  It is a one-man kitchen, extra bodies tend to bump into one another.

Garden, Home and Party: wood floors 2014

My nod to spring (below).  I collect bird’s nests once the owners vacate the premises (when I can find them).  The quail eggs are real but store bought.  The Halcyon Days enamel egg is the first Easter egg I bought when I began collecting these boxes…that year Mr. B and I had gone up in a hot air balloon…this egg will be a reminder of that fabulous adventure.

Garden, Home and Party: wood florrs 2014

Garden, Home and Party: wood floors 2014

The nest in my antique French scale is not real, but the little wren keeping watch over the eggs was hand carved by my dear friend’s dad {Linda (Bainbridge Island) and Gretchen (Irvine)}  Linda and Gretchen are sisters and they have adopted me as a sister, which is special since I’m an only child. 🙂

Garden, Home and Party: wood floors 2014

Confession:  Since our kitchen is short on counter top space I’m hoping that somewhere down the line I can get the new Nespresso Vertuoline, which would streamline our coffee counter.  We’re big fans of coffee…so we have a drip coffee maker and a Breville espresso maker.  The Nespresso Vertuoline does both all in the compact confines of a beautiful machine.  I only wish this was a paid advertisement for Nespresso!

Garden, Home and Party: wood floor 2014

I must say, the best thing in my kitchen is the Viking Stove. I honestly didn’t realize there was any difference between one stove or another until we bought this hard- working lovely.

The black piece at the end of the kitchen is our pantry.  The woman who helped with the design of our kitchen recommended creating a pantry that looked like a piece of furniture.

Here’s a close up of the floors, our large dog has broken them in getting up to chase something outside…we need to buy her some booties.

Garden, Home and Party: wood floors 2014Do you have any major projects on your list for this year?   I hope to take pictures of some of the other rooms in our home and share them with you this year.

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day

 {I realize I’ve been on a bit of a flora and fauna kick of late…I get this way when spring is upon us, I’m antsy for Spring’s arrival, how about you?.}

It’s Arbor Day {week} in California, March 7-12.  Does it seem odd to anyone besides me that Arbor Day {week} is held on different days, depending on the state you reside in?

Bottom line, I’m a huge fan of trees, always have been.  I grew up living on a 4 lane street lined with Maple trees.  It would have been ideal had it been a 2 lane road but I do recall loving the trees and the seasonal change to the landscape they brought.

When my landscape partner and I started our Blooming Borders business some years ago, we found ourselves waging battle (always subtle and subdued) with our clients to keep the trees they had.  More than once we lost the fight and we were sad to supervise the removal of old Sycamore or Alder trees—taken out to allow more light into the yard or to avoid the “messy leaf cleanup” in autumn. Many in our community keep their trees trimmed to roof height to comply with the community Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs). This rule usually stems from view issues of one kind or another.

Our son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter recently moved into a home in Austin that enjoys a tree-house feel thanks to the many trees on their lot…

*Note: these pictures were taken in the heat of summer just after the kids bought the home.  The seller had decided to skip watering the yard while the house was listed…really?!  Fortunately, the yard is so much prettier now that the kids have done some yard clean-up, and Austin has had some beneficial rain this past winter.

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

…the Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin value the historic trees on the grounds of this lovely hotel located in Austin’s South Congress District…

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

I have kept all of the trees on our postage sized lot and they provide shade in the summer and a pleasant back drop for our suburban tract house…

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

My favorite communities have an abundance of trees.  Palos Verdes, California, parts of Marin County, California, Bainbridge Island, Washington and my own community here in Irvine, all seem more inviting and lovely for their abundance of mature trees.

There is a park across the street from our home and the mature trees there break up the monotony of house after cookie-cutter house, not to mention the birthday parties, soccer practices, and sand lot playground they shade.

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

About a mile down the road is a community park that offers a stream and plenty of trees.  There’s even a Nature Center offering programs on the local flora and fauna.

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

Garden, Home and Party: Arbor Day 2014

Aside from the aesthetic, trees benefit a community by cleansing the air, even pollutants are partially controlled by trees.  In one study of an urban park, tree cover was found to remove 48 lbs of particulates, 9 lbs of nitrogen dioxide, 6 lbs of sulfur dioxide and 1/2 lb. carbon monoxide.

Mostly, I just love the beauty trees provide around a house.  To make my point on this Arbor Day {week}, here are a few lovely examples…

Garden, Home and Party: Ikebana

Flowers are a welcome mood and room brightener and maybe never as coveted as on these last few days/weeks(?!) of winter.  I am always on the lookout for new ideas and inspiration for a display of flowers, whether they are store bought or home grown or a combination thereof.  Bouquets (below) with unexpected elements are such a nice surprise.

Garden, Home and Party: Ikebana{source}

Flowers – they transport us, romance us, amaze us. They make us smile and swoon. Who could live without them?

—Charlotte Moss, designer

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

{source}

So I was excited to receive an invitation from Tuttle Publishing to read their new book, Japanese Ikebana for Every Season,  by Rie Imai and Yuji Ueno, and asked to post my thoughts.

Garden, Home and Party: Ikebana

I really enjoyed this book as my recollection of ikebana was of a far different style than the arrangements shared herein.  The classic ikebana arrangement should look natural, something I lean towards where flower arrangements are concerned.  But I used to think of ikebana arrangements as stark and possibly a little too modern for my tastes.  Clearly, this doesn’t have to be the case, for this pair of talented artists (the authors) have introduced a new view of ikebana.

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

Garden, Home and Party; ikebana

Author Rie Imai is an accomplished “lifestyle coordinator” in Japan, with a focus on interior design and flowers.  During her time in the United State Ms. Imai completed floral design course work at   Parsons New School for Design, New York and at City College in San Francisco.  She has traveled extensively and has mastered blending the cultural aesthetics of modern and traditional, as well as Eastern and Western influences into her floral designs.

Garden, Home and Party: Ikebana

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

Her co-author, Yuji Ueno, is an independent floral artist.  The book’s introduction to Mr. Ueno says it best, “…Yuji has created a style not linked to any recognized Japanese ikebana school…he has found the freedom to chart his own course.”  He has a personal website where you will find further inspiration.

In addition to some spectacular examples of the new ikebana, the book offers detailed words and illustrations on water absorption, cutting  and maintenance techniques; there are helpful tips on stabilizing, shaping and trimming which can assure your success as you embark on creating your own flower arrangements.

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

There are great ideas for each season, using items from the yard as well as what you can buy.  As with any floral arrangement, it’s the unexpected that catches my eye and presents a need to study exactly what has been included.

Garden, Home and Party: ikebana

The photography for the book was done by Noboru Murata, one of Japan’s most accomplished photographers.

The book will be a welcome reference to anyone who enjoys flowers in the home, and who doesn’t?

{Thanks to Tuttle Publishing for contacting me and providing me with Japanese Ikebana for Every Season}

Spring officially arrives on March 20th.  Happy Spring, just a little early!

Randy Boyd, revisited

Three years ago I first declared my love of a Laguna Beach cottage, owned by designer Randy Boyd.  The home had appeared in an issue of Cottage Living Magazine and from the name of the cottage, “Ocean Peek”, to the details of the home, it was love at first sight.  You can read my previous post HERE.  I had been blogging for about 18 months and this post made my year since Randy Boyd and his sister both commented on my post.

Randy Boyd’s dining room (below) is one of my favorite rooms of all time.  The chandelier, oil painting and wall sconces are stunning.  The wide bead board ceiling and walls provide such a warm and welcoming feeling to the room.  Brown and white toile with nail heads seal the deal for me.  I never grow tired of looking at images of this home.

As it turns out it wasn’t just the home, it was Randy Boyd’s design work that I so admired. The images above provide a glimpse of his residence, but as you’ll see, Thurston / Boyd design work is noteworthy, no matter what the style or where the home may be located.  In fact, Thurston / Boyd Interior Design, provides the services and expertise most of us would expect from a designer but its the focus on the individual clients’ “needs and lifestyles” that earn them the accolades and following that they enjoy.
Here’s some of the magic they perform on other homes…

…no, but maybe I wish I were.  Did that comment ever come up in your childhood, when you’d leave the door open and you ran outside to play?  In my family “born in a barn” was always mentioned when doors were left open.  Sorry, I digress.  This post was inspired by a friend’s son and his fiance who originally thought they wanted to have their 2014 wedding in a barn.

They choose a different venue but the seed of inspiration was planted…I started looking at barn images.  There are some incredible barns.  Working barns, as well as barns that have been converted into amazing homes.

Most of these barns reeled me in.

Granted, this barn would make for an enormous home, I love the main entrance of the barn and could imagine the upstairs being a grand master suite with a few extra bedrooms thrown in for guests.

This is one of my favorites, I love the barn doors and the cupola.  I’m also fond of the weathered wood finish on the planked walls of the barn.

Architectural Digest has several articles featuring barns.  As expected, each one is spectacular and very livable, if not luxurious.

home theater, television

Hi Everyone!  Happy Wednesday.  Since I love the cooler months of the year, and since one of the many reasons for that is the excuse to watch more TV,  I thought it might be a good time to talk television…then and now.

Garden, Home and Party 10.2.13

I pretty much like to think of myself as a ‘live in the moment’ kind of gal.  I plan ahead, but I truly do try to avoid looking back too much…there are some pretty nasty pot holes that plague me (why didn’t I save 10% out of every paycheck from my first job at Judy’s boutique and all subsequent jobs, why didn’t I become a dental hygienist, and why, oh why didn’t I wear sunscreen when I was a teen?!).

Garden, Home and Party, Television, then and now

More than that, I swore to myself I wouldn’t be the kind of “older” person who declared, “In my day we _______”.  That kind of looking back bothered me when I was younger and still bothers me today.

But…and you knew this was coming…when did television sets become the size of the screen at the local theater?  I know technology has made great strides in the size of the overall piece, no more large tubes that create the equivalency in weight of an over-sized box filled with boulders.  The weight of most television sets is now very manageable, unlike a large set we once owned that took 3 very strong men to move.  But *we have definitely decided somewhere along the way that we have/need to have life sized images staring at us when they speak their lines that broadcast in surround sound.

*we – read people in general

As winter sets in I’m certain there will be more indoor time, which might lead to more television viewing so here you go…

Garden, Home and Party 8.25.13 television in the home

Garden, Home and Party, television then and now

{Better Home and Garden}

I’ve covered the topic of how to hide a TV in a room but I thought this might help with those of us who have thrown in the towel and now have Daniel Craig in HD, a TV picture that shows every eyelash surrounding those dreamy blue eyes, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

And for those that enjoy keeping up with sports while watching a movie…

Weigh in, do any of these speak to you?  They aren’t me, even though I love to watch movies and television.  I’d love to hear how you’ve solved this design dilemma…in my humble opinion, television is a necessary evil. And I’d love to know if you have a new favorite TV show from the fall line-up.

Garden, Home and Party: Mirrors, II

This isn’t my first post about mirrors, I really like the beauty they add to a room, large or small, mirrors and the frames around them are always lovely.  In many instances they do double duty with the size enhancing of a room they offer.

Garden, Home and Party: Mirrors II

{unknown}

But it wasn’t until I read my blog friend, Victoria’s {Restoring our 1890 Victorian} post about her “kingdom” mirror that I saw the impressive benefit a really big mirror adds to a room.  This post is for you, Victoria.  Just look at these mirrors, aren’t they fabulous?

Garden, Home and Party: Mirrors II

{Restoring our 1890 Victorian ~ Kingdom Mirror}

A trumeau mirror is the ideal combination of art and reflection…here’s a DIY if you’re crafty and would like to try your hand at making your own.  I would love to find an antique but I hear they are cost prohibitive.  {Maybe Victoria can find one for me on Craigslist}  Since it’s the search that I love I will continue to see if I can stumble upon a steal someplace.

Do you have a favorite mirror?  So on to the fun part, a present to one lucky reader…

My birthday is January 27th and  I want to host my first giveaway.  I’ve thought long and hard about just what I’d like to give to one lucky reader.

I lean toward English country / traditional design, but there’s always been a hint of French country influence in my decorating.  Charles Faudree, who lost his battle with cancer this past November, was master of combining the two seamlessly.

A few years ago I was introduced to Carolyn Westbrook, “The French Inspired Home” through a blog site that loves all things French.  {This is where I would install a link if I could remember which blog site it was…apologies}.  So when I learned, a little late, of Westbrook’s newest book, Through the French Door:  Romantic Interiors Inspired by Classic French Style,  I thought it would be fun to offer a giveaway to my readers who may not know of her talents and would love to be inspired by her work.

Garden, Home and Party: Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is celebrated here in the U.S. ( I understand Canada has a Thanksgiving Holiday as well) and I’ve always loved this holiday.  There’s no gift buying involved, just good food, good friends and family, and for the men in my life, good football.

As I’ve “matured” I appreciate the good things that surround me, there’s no taking this stuff for granite, as maybe I did in my youth, and Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what we’re thankful for.

{Party Resources}

I’ve avoided the trend towards a gratitude journal for a couple of reasons, a) I’m terrible about keeping up with things like this…I start out strong and then let it drop; and b) I think about what I’m grateful for every day from the huge (family, friends, my first (and only-so far) granddaughter, whose birthday is on Thanksgiving Day this year, good heath) to the items that to some would seem frivolous (gardening, nature, good food, a warm house, blog friends, kind acts by strangers).

Garden, Home and Party: Minted and Julep

One of the many modern conveniences of internet shopping is the ease of finding great invitations and stationery online.  I love the advantages of selecting the exact card in the perfect color, ideal paper, appropriate font and a style you want for an event or occasion.

I shared with you my joy with this process when Mr. B and I ordered Christmas cards online a few years ago.  Then, in 2011, I needed invitations to our son’s engagement party, that is when I discovered Minted.

Garden Home and Party: Stationery, Christmas cards

As a company, Minted has been around longer than I realized (started in April 2007), but what sets it apart is their use of independent artists.  Their high end paper goods come in all imaginable shapes and sizes and serve all of life’s celebrations and holidays.

Their photo-Christmas cards are unique and can be customized with details such as shape, color details, photograph and include your personal names and dates.  It’s an online interactive creation and fun to see the options appear before your eyes.  Here are some of my favorites.

Minted recently started a blog, Julep.  “…a lifestyle blog dedicated to helping the busy, design-savvy woman create beauty all around her.”  The contributors are creative and share the most original ideas.   It sounds like a challenge, but after nearly an hour perusing their site, I realized there were so many items I wanted to revisit for party ideas and DIY projects around the house.  They’ve succeeded in giving a hand with creativity and specific how-to tutorials.   You’ll find a wide array of design ideas for home and party.  The DIY tab gives you detailed direction on the project you select and most are doable for everyone, even me!

The table below was set for a recent Minted Design Summit.  The team started a fun new Minted Party Ambassador program where you can apply for free party decor if you’re willing to blog about your event.

Timothy Corrigan designs

I had the good fortune of attending a book signing party held at my local Pottery Barn last week for the talented Timothy Corrigan.  His new book chronicles the restoration of his French Château du Grand-Lucé, located in the Loire Valley, just outside Paris.

Garden, Home and Party: Timothy Corrigan

Those of you who are kind enough to read my posts will know that I’m not necessarily drawn to château living, I typically prefer smaller spaces, more cottage than castle.  I’m drawn to Timothy Corrigan designs in part because his core philosophy in design  is basic to comfort and livability where rooms are concerned.

Even the most beautifully decorated room is not a total success unless you, your family and your guests feel that they can really live and use the room. A well-designed room is one that is both comfortable and elegant. – Timothy Corrigan

As I read a bit about him prior to the book signing I wondered if being raised in California might have something to do with his determination to create rooms that are comfortable.  His early profession as an advertising executive took him to Paris, and other regions of the world, where he decorated his apartment.  After seeing his work a friend asked him to design his apartment and a new career was born.

Garden, Home and Party: Timothy Corrigan

For a video tour of his apartment visit HERE

Garden, Home and Party: Timothy Corrigan

In his interview in November of 2010 with Diane Dorrans Seaks of Architectural Digest he addresses his view on comfort and practicality.  While most of us strive for those two essentials, it’s easy to miss the mark sometimes.  We all get caught making design decisions that are more about form than function.  Mr. Corrigan believes you can have both, and proves it in the rooms he puts his stamp on.

The gardens of his château were another draw.  The formal design is breathtaking in the photographs shown in the book.  Part of his agreement with the French government when buying the historic chateau was that he would open the grounds to visitors 6 days a week.  A tour will be high on my list my next visit.

The book shares details of the work involved in the restoration of  this historic landmark.  For its size it is such a warm, inviting and livable country home.  The initial major restoration took approximately 5 years and Timothy says it’s a work in progress—aren’t all homes?!

In a October 5, 2013 Los Angeles Times article by David A. Keeps on the book, Corrigan explained some of his decorating ideas,  “If you want people to feel that a room is bright and light, use yellow, not white, as people often think…your eye unconsciously translates yellow as sunlight.”

Corrigan talked about choosing linen for the upholstery and unfussy curtains to keep the room feeling less formal.  He also used sea grass carpeting, he explained that it’s softer on the feet and it brought a “more casual California feel” which translates to relaxed comfort.  Oh, and the stools are from Pottery Barn—I love this man.

The Château is 45,000 square feet sitting on 80 manicured acres.  {Maybe that’s why I might be intimidated by a castle}
Timothy Corrigan’s Los Angeles home, as featured in Architectural Digest [April 2012] is more appealing to me.  Have a look.

Like his Château, the grounds are lovely in the Los Angeles home…

It was such a pleasure briefly meeting Timothy Corrigan, the take away for me was that this is a designer that is so engaging and fun.  His high energy and genuine enthusiasm is contagious.  I hope you enjoyed this brief tour of some of his work.  His book is really lovely and would make a great gift for a Francophile (Christmas is around the corner).  Do you like château living or prefer the comfort of something a little more modest in size? 😀
