Curb appeal is important to me.  When driving around a neighborhood I am often tempted to stop in the middle of a street to view a wonderful house. (I know, its unsafe to stop dead without warning—but it can be tempting).  Sometimes it’s the landscape design or a beautiful flowering shrub or vine, or it can be the front door.  A front door can definitely stop me in my tracks.

When you think about the impact a front door can have on the overall curb appeal, and with very little investment, you wonder why more folks don’t paint their doors.  Some of the brightly painted doors below are definitely show-worthy.

We replaced our front door with a Dutch door some years ago.  We had it converted from a double-door with one side panel to a single door with two side panels.  Best investment we’ve made in our house.  Our west-facing house now captures the wonderful westerly ocean breezes that manage to waft over the range of low hills between our home and the Pacific.  We thought about painting the door and side panels red, but the door came painted and so we stuck with white.  When the time comes for a fresh coat of paint I’m painting them red, or some other tempting color.

mirrors

I’ve been hooked on Top Chef/Texas.  This season they featured Dallas, San Antonio and Austin.  Since Kyle, Jamie and Olivia live in Austin, Lyn and I thought it would be fun to watch…it was!

The show is now down to the final 6 chefs but before they sent the 7th contestant/chef home the team had to cook for Charlize Theron who stars in the latest upcoming Snow White movie—Snow White and the Huntsman.  I love Charlize Theron and she apparently loves food.  The cooking team had to prepare courses that reflected what an evil witch might eat.  It was very entertaining and the food, while sometimes scary (black chicken with the foot left on) was, according to the judges, quite tasty.

And…Julia Roberts has a Snow White movie due to be released March 1st titled Mirror, Mirror.

So, {I knew there was a post idea in here somewhere} in honor of these movies due to be released March 1st and June 1st, respectively, here is your mirror, mirror on the wall(s).♥

So, I wonder if Snow White would have mirrors all over her Fantasyland house or did her minion only speak to her from one?

cottage living, small rooms

Cottages hold a special place in my heart.  I’ve tried to figure out why I’m drawn to small spaces, rooms that feel cozy yet inviting and comfortable, I don’t have an answer.  Fortunately, Hubby is on the same page so we’re good to go.  We neither one have ever wanted a super large home.  I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t mind a bit more storage and a few extra rooms, even if they were small.

via Content in a Cottage

In the movie, The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, hands down, the Cotswold cottage of Kate Winslet’s character would be where I would want to live.  Maybe that’s because the cottage was supposed to be in the Cotswold…for me that would be heaven, thatched roof and all.

Nancy Meyers, genius

Sometimes with small comes sacrifice.  I was blog-surfing and stumbled upon a feature story of a very small, NY apartment.  The kitchen sported a washing machine where one might have expected a dishwasher.  That got me thinking, which would I rather have, a dishwasher or a washing machine?  [answer: washing machine] by the way, have they invented a combination washing machine/dryer combo yet?  However, I do believe small spaces can drive innovative ways to maximize space.  This window seat (above) could do double duty, in fact we built a window seat when our dining room (which is now our reading room) was a candidate for a new window; we installed a bay window that was the standard chair seat height.  We used to have our two young sons sit in the window at the end of the table for family dinners.  Now that window seat provides extra seating in our reading room.  (To read more about our room switch visit HERE).

via Nest Egg

Same with storage space, small homes are usually short on storage.  I think it’s what keeps my acquisitions in check.  Seriously, if I had a huge space to store stuff I could easily be a compulsive buyer in some arenas…dishes, flatware, decorative accessories!  Yikes, there would be more than I need if storage wasn’t an issue.  The above laundry space reminds me of my friends laundry room, which isn’t short on space at all, but she has the stackable washer and dryer {great call, Linda}  I like the idea of this as a great space saver.  The black fronts on the washer/dryer are really a nice contrast to the white cabinetry, don’t you think?

Small kitchens are especially challenging and I confess, if I could add square footage to any part of the house it would be in our kitchen.  Still, I find our lilliputian space forces me to buy only what I need in the way of electronic kitchen gadgets.

And there are clever storage ideas for this room as well, like…

via Coastal Living

Built-in shelves also add space and design value.  I love the camera c0llection featured along the upper most shelves, where you might not want to have to reach for an essential item you’ve stored there, but the look is very pretty…I think this might be a bathroom, based on the towels and bath salts on the shelf.  I have a friend that has a very small cottage on Balboa Island and the person that renovated her house (before she moved in) used a similar technique in the dining room.  They built a group of shelves between the studs and framed out the space.  My friend stored her wine glasses there and it looks very nice.

Layla Palmer at The Lettered Cottage designed this tiny space in their home to work as a reading room/guest room.  They used reclaimed wood on the walls and added a twin mattress.  Very clever and cozy!  If you’ve never visited Layla and Kevin be sure to stop by, you’ll get all kinds of ideas for maximizing your home.

Another Layla Palmer room, a beach cottage bedroom on Tybee Island

Using a chest of drawers in the closet saves floor space in a small bedroom.  Creating a comfortable room with the space you have can be challenging but doable.  There’s a lot of help with space-saving ideas in design in the world of blogs.

This (above) little sitting area may be just a small vignette in a much larger living space, but I like it.  The neutral palate and clever use of like-prints in the wall gallery won my vote.

Do you like small spaces or begin to feel claustrophobic in a cottage?  There is no right or wrong answer, it’s all a matter of personal taste and preference…hopefully you’ll drop by my cottage for a visit even if you prefer a spacious home.

By the way…Melissa at The Inspired Room is coming out with an ebook.  I can hardly wait.  Read all about it HERE.

day beds

I’ve never been much of a napper (not sure this is a word).  I believe this is because growing up I was always afraid I’d miss something, and I am pretty high energy.

As I’ve gotten older and life has gotten more hectic, I’ve gotten wiser and can now see the benefit of a little snooze when the mood strikes.  I don’t really like to lie on my bed when I want a nap, although I understand Winston Churchill often napped, and if he took one he believed you get in bed and under the covers!  {I wouldn’t want to mess up the bed mid-day, it’s a Type A thing}.

I do love to “rest my eyes” in a comfortable chair, usually my library chair with ottoman after reading a bit late afternoon when the sun beams into that room.   I could see myself napping on one of these…

This may actually be a bedroom, which is really great if it is, but with the un-shuttered glass doors, I thought it looked more like a parlor.

Now this is so inviting, who could pass up the chance to relax and rest in this lovely white wicker?

via Coastal Living

via Coastal Living

Witth this view (above)  I’m not sure I could actually nap, more like watch the water and hope for a school of dolphins!

This is lovely, but not sure it’s conducive  to a truly, comfortable  nap, what do you think?

…again with the view, is it me?  No, it can’t be, the view is too wonderful, how could you sleep with this view?

and an all time favorite (below) I’m shown before…I could really enjoy time here, napping or reading or relaxing!

via Coastal Living

Can’t you imagine yourself curling up with a good book, some Camomile tea (confession:  I don’t care for Camomile tea, more of an Earl Gray gal myself) and allowing yourself to nod off if the urge hits you?

Happy Thursday, only 1 more day until the weekend!  Do you nap?

summer homes

Now that Mother Nature has at last given us (Southern Californians) a small taste of summer, (no, I’m not whining, why do you ask?) I thought I’d share with you some images of homes that ‘speak’ summer to me.

This AD image looks to be located at the beach, but even without seeing the ocean you can just tell that those stairs probably lead you to the sandy beach below.

You look at certain architectural styles and immediately think of the beach or summer vacation, right?  Shingled homes are especially reminiscent of all things Cape Cod or Eastern Seaboard.  I love the look.

There are also several cottage-looking homes that remind me of some of the yet-to-be-remodeled Balboa Island “beach” cottages or other coastal town cottages in SoCal where the quaint cottage hasn’t been replaced with the McMansion that tends to overbuild for the lot (no offense to those that want maximum square footage for the $$$).

This may be a garden room, but with the table set for lemonade and finger sandwiches it reminds me of summer (not that I get to enjoy that very often due to work).

This house is gorgeous no matter what season but the vintage soft-topped convertible Mercedes speaks summer to me, don’t you think?

…more my speed, how I love a little backyard cottage.

via Peggy & Fritz

Last year the talented designer, Erin Paige Pitts did a post HERE on several Balboa homes (several shown below)  she discovered on a run.

What type of home says summer to you?  Fond memories of a cottage at the lake or on the beach or up in the mountains?

Happy Summer!

Organizing issues

Organizing

I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this whole spring—let’s get organized! mood that’s seems to be sweeping the country neighborhood. Maybe there’s something in the air…not sure, but I need to capitalize on it while it lasts.

Image via Martha Stewart

For my type A / OCD personality, there is almost nothing more satisfying than cleaning/organizing a space.  I know weird, right?

Maybe not quite as “organized” as Martha

For some reason the kitchen is where I usually start when this industriousness descends upon me.  I have a small kitchen and less (stuff) is definitely more where my kitchen is concerned.  Just a few careless turns of emptying the dishwasher and throwing things in the cupboard can create chaos and extreme disorganization.

Image via House of Smith                                                                                 Image via Penny Pantry

My pantry is extra small since when we remodeled the kitchen I opted for what I felt was attractive (a piece that resembles a piece of furniture) rather than a large, well designed boxy shape space, complete with pull out shelves and built-in organizing features.

My pantry

Clearly, I have my work cut out for me.

For years Hubby has expressed a desire to put cereal and dry goods, (cookies, crackers, pasta, etc.) in airtight containers over keeping the original box.  I can give you the reasons why I never wanted the glass/plastic containers:  can’t remember what the expiration date on those crackers is; can’t remember what the calorie count is on the cereal; can’t remember what I put in this jar, is that sugar or salt?  I realize there are ways to get around this but if I was going to streamline and work more efficiently I didn’t want labels or tags that could get soiled or bent (very OCD, right).  But I’ve started to see the errors of my thinking.  I found these containers and am ready to store almost anything in them…

OXO POP storage containers, available HERE

Image via Martha Stewart

As most of you probably know, there are all sizes and types of containers out there, its just that I really never thought I’d want to use them.  The OXO containers are air tight with the push of a button, no burping necessary (remember Tupperware and the recommended burping?).

I’m not sure whether I’ll label all 4 (so far) of my OXO canisters—so far we have coffee in one and decaf coffee in the other and I did label the decaf; the other 2 have cereal in them and I can identify the cereal without a problem.

Clearly there are some pantry items I wouldn’t put in containers…I like the labels on the bottles and jars of some of the stash, but I must admit, after fighting it for years, it does feel very tidy having a few of the clear, clean storage canisters.

If you would like to read more on this topic I urge you to visit Beach Bungalow 8, her post the other day was very entertaining and informative!

Family

I will be taking a little break from .     Our granddaughter (5 months old, April 28) is visiting!

As many of you may know, Son #1 and his lovely wife live in Austin, Texas.

They have been amazing making sure Grandma and Grandpa see pictures weekly and we Skype weekly but (you knew this was coming) all of that can’t compare with holding a sweet little girl and getting to snuggle with her…

feed her…

read to her…

take her on walks…

…you get the picture.

I will return to my 3 posts a week schedule beginning April 22th.  I’ll miss you and treasure our “blog land friendship”!

Happy President’s Day!

The White House Rose Garden

Since I didn’t have to work today, {hooray!} thanks to Presidents Washington and Lincoln (or is this holiday now for all Presidents?) I thought I’d share the interior rooms of our nation’s residence.  Some are dressed for Christmas but were so pretty I thought I’d still put them up.

White House, Blue Room

Peacock blue, very pretty.

White House, Oval Office

I’ve never been to Washington D.C., how sad is that?  {bucket list item #4}.  But I do think we’re (U.S.A) lucky to have such a lovely home for the leader of the free world and from what I can see, and have seen in other PBS tours, it’s truly beautiful.

White House, Library

White House, Red Room

You know I have a soft spot for red rooms.

White House, Bowling Alley

Do you suppose the first family is bowling today?  Did they get the day off?

Have a wonderful day and I hope you enjoy a 3-day weekend as well.
