Since Halloween is on a Thursday night this year, I thought I would make Mr. B. and I a comforting meal to fortify us between the doorbell and goblins. I’m trying Braised Short Ribs from Jenny Steffens Hobick of Everyday Occasions. Doesn’t this look delicious? Jenny comes up with fabulous recipes and I’ve provided the link (above).
Since it needs to cook some time in the oven, I’ll prepare them this evening and we’ll eat them tomorrow. That often enhances the flavors and makes everything taste even better.
I’m also including a few images I’ve gathered that might offer some ideas for last minute decorations…

Do you get a lot of trick-or-treat goblins and princesses in your neighborhood?

Great idea on the braised short ribs! I’m inspired now to make my beef stew. We only get about 20 trick-or-treaters but we make a big deal out of each and every one of them. Sadly, I eat most of the candy! Next year, I’m going to have my husband hide it until Halloween. Enjoy the evening!

Julie, Ha, ha, ha…I gave Mr. B. strict instructions to keep the bag of H-candy in the garage until the big day. Like you, we get about 20 max. little tykes. They are all sweet and their parents are always traveling in a group. I remember those days! Have fun. I love stew this time of year. Karen

Unless Halloween falls on a weekend, we hardly get any trick-or-treaters… bummer, since I really love giving out candy.
I didn’t even do any decorating this year (I’m surely about to be arrested by the blog police) but I just couldn’t face hauling out all the mason jars this year.
p.s.- I love those white pumpkins printed with music!!

We attended a Halloween party in Austin for kids and adults. The hostess was a first cousin of Martha Stewart, or should be. She had so many cool ideas…I will be handing out store bought candy tomorrow evening…but hey, that’s better than the woman somewhere in your region that is handing out notes to the parents declaring that the chubby (in her opinion) kids shouldn’t be eating sweets! Seriously! So sad. xo, Karen

That sounds delicious. I made beef stew last night…a very simple recipe for some comfort food.We were going to have soup for Halloween, but it is just too darn warm for it here…waiting until the weekend. Jenny always has the best recipes. I LOVE the photo of the arrangement with the corn tied with twine. Beautiful.
We do not get many trick or treaters – usually less than a dozen, but this year we may get many more since I am working with all grades in our school, and most know where we live. Hope your short ribs turn out delicious!

Kelly, Are you out in the country? I mean, not in the suburbs? Our trick or treaters used to be many but we only have about 20 because our neighborhood still has several “retirement age” residents. We are happy for the 12-20 little munchkins that we get. The parents have indicated how happy they are that we have our lights on and are handing out candy. This is what keeps us going. How warm is it where you are? We are warming up for Halloween and will probably get to the mid-seventies again, but our evenings are usually pretty cool…58 or lower. I’m ready for fall weather and stew weather. xo, Karen

I’m going to make chicken pot pie this weekend–one of our favorite comfort foods. Stew won’t be far behind. I love the white pumpkins with the garlands, and the one painted like Acoma pottery! We’ve been so busy with the kitchen and the kitten project that we haven’t had time to carve our pumpkins … but I’ll roast the seeds right after Halloween. We never get very many kids, so guess who eats the candy??

D’Arcy, We love chicken pot pie. I have a decadent (I guess that’s the word for something less than a health food) recipe from Emerile. It always turns out. Another comfort food favorite, Shepherd’s Pie. Top that meal with a candy from the Halloween bowl and I’m a happy camper. I didn’t carve our pumpkin this year and I miss the seeds. I did help our granddaughter carve and she shared the toasted seed with me. xo, Karen

Karen,
That rib recipe looks wonderful. I know that we’d love it. The decorations were really inspiring too – especially the one with the mercury glass pumpkins and gourds. Lovely! Happy Halloween and may you get lots of cute little trick or treaters!

Thanks, Linda. The ribs were delicious and the goblins, while few, were darling. xo, Karen
