Winter – spring cleaning list, Part I

Spring cleaning

Because I’ve been thinking about spring…don’t really know why, it’s only January after all…it occurred to me that there are plenty of things that need attention in my home.

Not just items I need to spring clean (because with a hubby, 2 dogs and a cat there are always things that need to be cleaned), but some drawers and closets need serious attention.

The following punch list will be my focus between now and April (when my weekends will be devoted to time in the garden—at least 4-5 hours each weekend, calendar willing.

Recipes: Is it just me or do you find new recipes almost weekly that you are certain you have to prepare sometime?  Last year I made inroads in paring down my recipe files.  I eliminated 3 x 5 cards and converted those recipes to full-page, 3-ring binders.

I try to keep only the cookbooks I use on a regular basis.

A couple of years ago I attempted to streamline my recipes by creating a Tastebook, a service of the site Epicurious where you can upload your recipes and pictures and they put them in a binder of your choosing.

This is a very cool way to store recipes, but does involve some work and a few $$$.

I’m not completely sure this whole binder idea is ideal, but I do like the convenience of taking out the page and making notes after I’ve used the recipe.  I still need to weed out more—how many bread pudding recipes does one person need? (Don’t answer that).

Sweater drawers: I’m a huge fan of sweaters of all kinds and I try to keep the wool/cashmere sweaters in a drawer that has cedar pieces and lavender sachets in it to ward off the moths.  After a particularly cold winter I confess, some of my sweaters have been put away in the wrong place, some ending up in the wire elfa drawers of the closet where they are particularly vulnerable to the little insects that delight in using my sweaters as their brunch buffet.  I need to go through the lot and de-pill some, fold some, using the proper Martha Stewart way, and send some to the dry cleaners.

Seriously, Martha has quite a lot to say about how we should fold our sweaters.

Paper/stamps/assorted Paper Source materials: A few years back I jumped on the bandwagon that is Paper Source and decided I’d be making a lot of my own note cards for thank you notes, invitations and the like.  I’ve done some of that, to be sure, but meanwhile the materials have stacked up in boxes that need some serious organizing if I plan to do more of this time-consuming, but oh-so-satisfying, hand crafting of notes!

via Martha Stewart

This could take some serious concentration.

Magazines: Just typing the word gives me both pleasure and pressure.  Pleasure in that one of my favorite ways to wile away free time is to sit with a cup of tea and thumb through magazines…and not just any magazine, shelter magazines!  Duh!  However, they stack up and I need to focus on what articles I want to keep for future blog posts and reference and which magazines I can pass on to a friend for her to peruse before recycling.

Otherwise, maybe I should send the old magazines to Nike.  They can make me a pair of shoes.

Leave it to Nike to think of something so fun!

I’d love some input as to what you do with magazine articles you really want to keep…I have 3-ring binders full of inspiration but sometime wonder if those take up too much space.

English gardens, holiday

Maybe its because I’m a first time grandma, or maybe it’s just that time of year when I reflect on events of the past…but I’ve been thinking about how time has flown by and before we knew it our children were adults and now we have children with children! What does this have to do with Christmas, you ask?  I guess it’s the time of year we all start reflecting a bit on years that have passed…and for me, the eternal optimist, an eye on the upcoming year.

I love the activities around our home this time of year and embrace how they (activities) change as a family changes.  I still delight in baking, putting up the tree, dinners with friends and family and presents.

I enjoy reading Polar Express and believe with all my heart in the spirit of the story.  (If you’ve only seen the movie but never read the book, you may be disappointed).  Some years I join my dear friends with a ticket to Handel’s Messiah.  The traditions can change and new traditions can become the standard, at least for now.

Christmas can be simple and wonderful; it’s what you make it, right?

I hope you enjoy a Happy Christmas with family and loved ones and the best the holidays can offer!

I’m off to Austin to meet my very first grand daughter, born November 28th!  I’ve scheduled some holiday ideas and will return on December 17th to share more ramblings.  Happy Friday

Christmas, tradition

When our sons were little I can remember them circling toys in the Toys R Us catalog in response to my question, “What do you want Santa to bring you this Christmas?”  My husband and I were always on a budget so we would listen to them throughout the month of December to make sure Santa we got them what they wanted most.

Once they were older and knew the facts about Santa (parents are Santa’s helpers since clearly Santa can’t be all over the world in one night, right?) we would ask for a list from each of them and to this day that is my method for getting them the very thing they would like…along with some surprises.  Now, I understand that this is the “easy way out”…I know if I were more clever and creative I would know intuitively know what everyone on my list would love and I’d buy it…but I’m not nearly so clever and due to full-time work have little time to ponder the question.

So, I’ve put out the request and am waiting for the lists to pour in.  Meanwhile, my list of wishes is growing by the day.  What is it about this season—the stores bring in wonderful items and display them with more panache than usual and I’m hooked.  Not to mention the endless stream of catalogs, some of which I’ve never seen before, and the list grows.

In fact, I don’t need one single solitary thing, truly I don’t.  But boy, do I see so many things that would be fun to have!  So…I thought I’d share…I’d love to hear what some of you are wishing for this season—besides world peace and an end to worldwide hunger.

I've read about this book and seen some of the pages in blogland but I think I'd enjoy a copy.

Okay, I realize this is too practical, but that's the kind of gal I am...I would love a food scale and just never have purchased one for myself.

This medium Pierre Deux pewter serving tray has been on the radar for some time.

...along with these Pierre Deux coasters.

And while I realize this list holds only items for or about the home and design—well, that’s how I’ve always been.  Hubby used to ask, would you like a diamond bracelet and I’d say, “I’d rather have French doors!”  And on that note, since this is just a “wish list” I’d love to renovate our guest bathroom with this…

Unfortunately, Pottery Barn says this isn't available to California residents, what's up with that?

I hope all your wishes come true!

California wine country, Dean & DeLuca market, St. Helena

I thought I’d add a few more of my favorite stops during our vacation in Napa Valley—

While the wine country offers incredible wine tasting, and I do enjoy a glass of wine now and then {ahem, smile}…our band of merry-makers enjoyed a farmers market in Napa, a delicious visit to Dean & DeLuca (an incredible specialty market that could convert anyone who visits into a “foodie”) and some charming shops in St. Helena.

Saturday morning we decided that since we were renting this wonderful house with a well-equipped kitchen we should pick up some food items to nibble on as well as suitable food for a dinner we planned to host for the grooms parents.  We headed into Napa thinking we would try to find a Costco (can’t beat their meats, produce and even their selection of wines).  Unfortunately, the closest location, according to the Costco website, was in Santa Rosa and the traffic (due to the holiday) made us decide we could make-do with Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s—if you call that “making do”.

We enjoyed breakfast at a delicious little cafe called Graces Table Global Kitchen,  and then stumbled upon a farmers market on our way to the car.

The farmers market near our home in Southern California has always been a go-to place for freshly picked produce of all kinds and varieties, and other novelties...the bakery is great too and Napa's Oxbow Public Market was no exception.

What is it about home grown tomatoes? We all nearly fought over them---we purchased these and some heirlooms that were mouth-watering good!

On Sunday we headed into St. Helena and stopped along the way at Dean & DeLuca.  This is a specialty market that carries artisan cheeses, every imaginable kind of coffee, tea, candies, condiments, breads, desserts, wines, beers—well, you get the idea.

This is such a fun market---even if you don't buy any of their slightly pricey goods you will enjoy browsing the aisles of this well-equipped "gourmet" market.

As we drove into the little town of St. Helena we were charmed by the age and architecture of some of the buildings.

The ladies in my group ducked into Napa Valley Vintage Home gift store and we were so happy we did! I wanted 1 of everything!

There was definately an old world influence going on here and so many of the items were French or English in design---my favorite! {sigh}

Napa Valley Vintage Home

It was a very relaxing vacation and I can highly recommend the region whether you enjoy wine or not!  What are some of your favorite vacation spots?

Making the most of where you live is something I’ve never had trouble doing—maybe it’s the Nester in me (or the optimist).  I have enjoyed each and every place I’ve lived, but this became especially true once I was able to do what I wanted in the way of decorating.  My first apartment was a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom place on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach.  I shared the apartment with 3 other girlfriends who happen to work at Disneyland with me.  This only whetted my appetite for decorating my living space.

I soon moved into a 1 bedroom place on my own—it’s an only child thing.  One of my best friends, Linda, shared my love of creating a comfortable living space and we used to shop weekly for decorative accessories and items that might make a future first kitchen as a married lady (trousseau).

This was one of the first pans I bought and it has lasted me 37 years.

I must have been a child bride!

This is one of the items we used to shop for when my girlfriend and I were anticipating owning our own kitchens one day.

Having lived in my current house these past 28 years (which have flown by) I marvel that I can still think of things I’d like to do to the house but most importantly, I still love where we live.

Part of the reason I’m happy here is the neighborhood itself.  For a tract of houses the surrounding area has lots of rural charm.  There are plenty of sidewalks to exercise on (walk or jog) and bike trails but there are also some walking trails—Madison, our terrier mix, loves this route best.

Madison is telling me it's time for our weekend walk with Debbie and Jane.

Does she look impatient? Yep!

We have this little stream that runs through a community park---I've been told it's runoff from a neighborhood reservoir

I wonder who carved this chair from a tree stump.

We have fun getting our exercise in this community and I’m thankful I can make time stop to smell the great outdoors once in awhile.

I hope your life allows you time to get out and walk around the neighborhood, smell the roses or sage brush, as the case may be.  What do you like about where you live?

A trip down memory lane…House Beautiful

House Beautiful magazine, JoAnn Barwick, simple design

One of the first “shelter” magazines I subscribed to as newly-married homeowner was House Beautiful.  About the same time we purchased our first home JoAnn Barwick was brought on board as Editor of House Beautiful.

Isn't this a welcoming entrance?

Wikipedia says:  House Beautiful is an interior decorating magazine that focuses on decorating and the domestic arts. First published in 1896, it is currently published by the Hearst Corporation, who purchased it in 1934. It is the oldest still-published magazine in what is known by publishers as the “shelter magazine” genre.

It was launched in the UK in 1989, targeting Middle England. Is that anything like “middle earth”?  🙂

I was very sad when JoAnn Barwick left the magazine in 1991…I felt like a good friend had moved away and I would miss her musings and insights into hearth and home and all that accompanies that.  Those of us who share this passion for home I believe we get attached to those who share our love!

The other favorite I enjoyed during those Barwick years with House Beautiful was a feature that was always on the very back page of the magazine called “From Thornhill Farm” written by Dee Hardie.  Dee’s images and words about life on a farm were wonderful.  She and her husband, Tom, had 4 adult children (although I believe during her time with HB she lost one of her sons) but she shared the joy of children (and eventually grand children), gardening, cooking and family life with such enthusiasm it was like a breath of fresh air each month.

It was a happy surprise when I opened the July/August 2010 issue of Traditional Home to see a wonderful cottage owned by my “friend” JoAnn Barwick and her husband Fred.  Her style preference has always been Swedish (she has published a couple of books featuring this style of décor) although she is of Norwegian descent.  As you can see in the images, she keeps her rooms simple, understated even, but always warm and welcoming.

All images from July/August Traditional Home magazine.

Back-to-school, fall, supplies

It seems that no matter where you live there is something in the air around the first part of September—it’s that back-to-school, fall rush of energy that affects so many of us.  Like spring’s “new beginnings” I believe it’s safe to say that for many, fall is just as bracing.

School days have been gone from my radar, aside from the traffic jam near University High on my way to work, for 5 years (when Son #2 graduated from college).  Still, my internal clock reminds me that it’s that time of year when the excitement surrounding buying school clothes and supplies hits me, as if I were headed to the classroom.

They had me at "Preppy" --- disclosure: I've been a preppy since they came up with the term.

Russel+Hazel has some unique school/office supplies.

I’m clearly not the only blogger that has been bitten by the bug.  paper{whites} had a great post on school supplies, as did Content in a Cottage.

Knock-Knock has some fun stamps—maybe more for adults than back-to-school kids 🙂

Knock-Knock is worth a visit.

Reading fellow bloggers musings prompted me to do a Google search of unique office supplies.  In addition to the outstanding See Jane Work site I found a couple of others (listed above)  that could be dangerous to the stationary/organizing/office geek.

3-ring binders have come a long way!

Have fun and I hope you are ready for class (code for gearing up for fall) to begin.

I’m going to be a Grandma!

grandchildren, parenting

I have some exciting news to share!  Son #1 and his lovely wife, are expecting a baby girl in November.  This will be our first grand baby, you may know how this feels, unbelievable!

The fun part, at least for me, is that it’s a GIRL.  I get to think pink for the first time.  We have 2 sons and I loved raising boys.  They have been eye opening to an only child (moi) and perfectly delightful, although I will admit, sometimes living with 3 men (hubby made 3) I felt outnumbered.

Now I get to think about dress-up trunks, Fancy Nancy books (I hear little girls love this book!), tea parties and Little Mermaid.

You can buy this book on Amazon, which is why there is a “Look Inside” on the top.

The other fun part is that I’m already thinking of how we can carve out a little space for this grand baby and hopefully future grand babies.  I want to pull down the children books (currently stored in the attic) and set up a bookshelf with all of the books and toys I saved.  Girls don’t mind playing with trains, do they?

Image via Victoria Magazine

I can pull out the Beatrix Potter china that Son #1 used as a child.  This will be so much fun! {smile, sigh}

Image via Victoria Magazine

Now if only I can figure out a way to buy an extra house in Austin, Texas (which is where they live) or buy a plane so I can fly between California and Texas quickly and easily! {smile}

Okay, any of you readers that are grandmas, please give me a clue…I’m going to need some guidance here.

making thank you notes, Table Settings

When I’m invited to someone’s house for lunch or dinner part of the fun for me is observing what clever and creative table setting, flower arrangement and menu my friends and family come up with.  Not long ago I attended a ladies luncheon and my friend’s table was so beautiful I took a picture of it.

Isn't this a pretty table setting? I love it.

While uploading the pictures to my computer I came up with an idea that I thought I’d share…

Michael's card stock is sold individually or in a tablet containing several colors.

When you’d like to create a special thank you note this is fun and easy.  Print the picture (sizing it to the card/envelop you are going to use).  For the notecard I purchased cardstock from Michael’s and made my own card (fold over style).  Paper Source has pre-cut blank  cards in a variety of colors (and matching envelopes all of which  go on sale from time to time (especially if its a paper color that they’ve discontinued).

If you have never been to a Paper Source store prepare to be amazed!  If  you don’t have one of their stores in your area you can shop online (click the link–not the logo— above).  The Paper Source folks make buying online super easy and they have a blog where you can get some great ideas—and NO,  I don’t get paid by them to rave about them!

I used 1 color of card stock for the card then used another color to frame the picture. Use a glue stick to adhere each layer to the card.

Now, once you have your picture glued to the card you’re going to use you then can either type or write your thank you note on the inside and then enclose it in a vellum envelop.

I was able to buy vellum envelopes at Paper Source on their clearance rack. I will use an address label for the address.

Either way, the picture personalizes the card and provides the hostess with a thoughtful reminder to a great event.  Have fun!

Amazing place to live/visit

Bainbridge Island, small town charm

Little shops line the street alongside wonderful cafes and bakeries!

One of my dearest friends lives on Bainbridge Island in the beautiful state of Washington.  Early last year my friend read in the local paper that the City of Bainbridge Island was going to stop their practice of putting up flower baskets along the main street due to budget constraints.  My friend wrote to the editor and gave some very sound advice on how they could trim costs in other areas of the budget and retain the beauty and charm of the traditional hanging baskets.

Beautiful flower baskets line the main street in town on Bainbridge Island

As a result of her letter my friend now volunteers many hours towards coordinating the team of volunteers that water these baskets (which includes her and her husband).  The best part of this story is the flower basket program is alive and well and my friend has been commended (well deserved) for her willingness to speak up and to actually be willing to devote time and energy to this project she and others hold dear.

Pegasus Coffee is unbelievable!

This is a lovely village-like place that reminds me of the Cotswold’s in England.  The main street through town is lined with incredible flower baskets and it takes a team of volunteers to water them (when mother nature sleeps in!).

You get to ride a ferry to get to and from the island, how fun would that be?!
